Source SDK
Anyone played around in here much? I've been meaning to learn more about it to get a wee head start before I start my course in Sept, I'm all up on Java and C++, so classes and object orientated programming isn't anything new to me, but I have no idea about this package, is it a proper dev kit or just a point and click level editor?

Are you thinking of the Source SDK (Software Development Kit)?
If so, it has a few parts to it, http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SDK_Docs is probably a good place to start

Though I've not yet dabbled personally, I'm pretty sure it's similar to Unrealed. Rather than just a map editor (I believe the source engine's level editor is called Hammer - I could be wrong) it's a suite of different tools.
I opened it once, I think it crashed though.
On further investigation, I appear to be right

The old version of Hammer for HL1 (or worldcraft as it was known as for ages) was fairly straight forward to use, I made quite a few levels, although I never did see them through to completion.
I really really should try my hand at HL2, it does things that were bodge jobs in hl1 really simply and does other things that the first game just wouldn't do.

There's quite a lot in there, there's a map editor (hammer), a license to unlock Softimage XSI (a 3D modelling prog) a lot of infos and some "instant" mod-making tools which create all the correct subdirectories so you can edit away without fucking up the real games.
I tried the first tutorial, which requires MS Visual C++ and just tweaks rocket speed I think, and it was really easy and worked first time. It's something I'd like to do if I had more time than I do.

Ahh, worldcraft, used to spend hours on the level I made for that, it was a disco/warehouse with a giant pit in the middle with one of those massive blue monsters in. I even bothered to put enemy spawn points, event triggers, the whole shebang, it was still shit though, cant expect much from a young boy with an obsession for close range crowbar to crotch shots
