Help, Im crap at techy stuff.

Post by the-ox »

Hi. Just wondering if I can get some help or recommendations. Got a AMD something or other processor 2.4ghz. Got a nvidia 6100 256mb graphics card. Got 1gb memory. My mate has a lower spec PC and games run nice and smooth on his. Im stuggling to run CZ Source. Motion is jerky, laggy. Help. What do I need to replace, and what with?

Suggestion appreciated.

The graphics card, with something a little nicer.

what to replace it with depends on your budget and whether your motherboard supports AGP or PCI-express.

loes  as for better stuff, what berk said, cpu's can be forgiven for slowness now, but cards show their age horribly, get a better card!

Been looking at ATI X1650 (or higher) 512mb card, another 1gb memory. Im guessing that should do the trick? And my PC accepts PCI cards.....whatever that means! Will let you all know. Cheers for the advice!

Do you mean PCI Express? Despite the similar name, it's a very big difference. A modern PC will typically have one or two PCI Express slots (for graphics cards) and up to three PCI slots (for network cards, sound cards, et cetera).
PCI graphics cards are still available (for very old machines), and you most assuredly do not want one.

Also, if you've got an Nvidia card your motherboard might not like ATI (although I might be thinking of dual GPU boards). Is the 6100 onboard? I got the impression it was from the Nvidia website.

This is the point where I suggest you find a mate who knows stuff to have a look at it. (as they'd be able to tell in about 5 seconds)

Failing that, photo of the inside of your case might work.

If your machine only accepts PCI cards, you're fucked (It's really not worth bothering, new computer time)
If it accepts AGP cards, you're in moderate luck.
It is accepts PCI-Express cards, you're sorted.

I think the 6100 is onboard, yeah.

Basically everything is happy and works well together.

Only things that don't work is Crossfire in SLI mobos. and SLI in crossfire mobos.

Welcome back!

If you download CPU-Z, unzip and run it, on the Mainboard tab, under Graphic Interface it should tell you what type of socket you have.

Hello dude, welcome back to the sticky stuff.
This is a mate of mine/Stroudy's and unfortunately (for him) he lives in Wales, so no chance of me going round to have a look.
Then again that might be fortunate with my recent troubled PC upgrades

Okay, (despite it not saying in the list)

You need a PCI-Express (PCI-E) Graphics card*.

What you want very much depends on budget, but I'd go for something like This (£100)

However, your machine only has a 250W psu, which might not be up to the job (then again, it might be. that depends on quality)
For a PSU upgrade I'd suggest something like This (£50)

Oh, and feed Fista to the dog

*As far as I can tell from some googlewhoring anyway

Wouldnt a 512 card be better then a 256? Been shopping around, and Asus or Saphhire (ATI?) cards seem to be money for value, but what the hell do I know?
