I combat it by always making sure I'm holding the metal before my foot touches the ground.
I combat it by closing the door by pushing the window, or by making sure Mrs Pants gets out first and earths it (works every time).

bad physics there. the protection you get from being in the car has nothing to do with the connection to the ground. The electricity just arced from a cloud a few thousand feet up in the air, the jump from your car to the ground would not be a problem. The electricity just doesn't want to go on the inside of the car. Since the electrons repel each other, they want to get as far away from each other, they'll occupy the outside of the car body until there just isn't any more space for electrons on the outside.
