PS3 has 1 CPU at 3.2GHz, single layer.

X360 has 3 VMX-128 vector unit's (128 registers)
PS3 has 1 VMX verctor unit (standard registers)

X360 has 1 MB L2 cache x 3
PS3 has 512KB L2 cache x 1

PS3 has 2 video outputs
X360 has 1 video output

X360 has a 48-way paralell UNIFIED scheduled shader system (48 billion shader opperations per sec!!)
PS3 has a multi-way paralell STANDARD shader system

PS3 has 2 TFLOPS of total floating point performance
X360 has 1 TFLOPS of total floating point performance

PS3 supports 7 wireless controllers
X360 supports 4 wireless controllers

PS3 supports bluetooth
X360 doesnt

PS3 has 1 ethernet in, 2 ethernet out
X360 has only 1 ethernet in

PS3 works with PS1 and PS2 games, and can use PSP as its controller
X360 works with XBOX games

------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
My conclusion is that the XBOX 360 is an unrivaled graphics and processing monster, but Playstation 3 has double the floating point capabilities, which means deeper 3D scenes than XBOX 360. PS3 is all about compatability and supports more devices than XBOX 360, but the X360's focus on internet gaming will make the PS3 weaker in that department. Finally, PS3 will automatically play more games than any console, period. This could make PS3 attractive to 3rd party companies, which means even more games to choose from. PS3 and XBOX seem to be well balanced, Versatility vs Power.

Well while Xbox builds around graphical development and online play, Sony tend to sign the biggest & best devolpers thanks to their former track records, and i'm sure the ps2 will contribute to this.

Also, people who play games online through the Xbox, really need to be introduced to PC.

/EDIT also, i thought 3 CPU's working @ 1ghz dont clock to the same as one CPU running @ 3ghz.

agreed, the xbox was a failure despite better graphics due to frankly poo xbox only games. no1 was going to buy an xbox purely on the strength of one game.
and its dvd player needed a remote thingy also its in-game music thing that it boasted about was hardly put into games which is why i got mines in the 1st place but i got it for £50 so i'm not complaining.
PS2 = far better games, better controller and generally far more fun to play.
the majority of people on xbox live are usually computer illiterate and are also usually loud obnoxious american 12 year olds, which makes it more fun to tell them how much i hate them (classic killslay insults include: "i hope you catch an std and die" and "you have to push your uncle out the way for a shot of your dad")

i heard that 3 cpu's don't clock the same. i'm guessing that 3 seperate cpu's might run faster due to being able to multitask better but its going to consume power like a beast, all those cooling precautions for 3 seperate processors can't be good. although don't quote me on that i'm just guessing.

Well I'm definitely reserving judgement till I see what games are available.

At the moment the Xbox is absolutely dreadful for platform/shooter games that both myself and the missus like to play (Jax & Daxter, Ratched & Clank etc....)

XBox has always been too streamlined with their games in the past, and hopefully they will realise that variety within gaming is the way to go, as frankly, it's not just lads that play console games any more.

This doesn't mean that I want to see lots of "Barbie's Pink Porche Racing" games becoming available, but a large range of games that anyone can play, plus more "party" style games would eb a good thing to.

One thing's for sure, the games are going to look awesome, and online PC gaming now has a big hurdle to get over, as it's fallen well behind when it comes to technical specs

Being a playstation whore I feel the need to correct some of Mr p0t4T0's conclusions as he seems to have magically changed them to favour the xbox 360:

PS3 has 8 CPU cores at 3.2GHz each
X360 has 3 CPU cores at 3.2GHz each

PS3 has 8 VMX vector units
X360 has 3 VMX-128 vector unit

X360 has 1 MB L2 cache
PS3 has 512KB L2 cache

X360 has a 48-way paralell UNIFIED scheduled shader system (48 billion shader opperations per sec!!)
PS3 has a multi-way paralell STANDARD shader system (This doesnt mean the ps3's graphics card is less powerful, its more powerful than 2 geforce 6800 ultras. The X360 and ps3 graphics cards are just about tied from what i've heard.)

PS3 has 256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz and 256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz.
X360 has 512 MB of 700 MHz GDDR3 RAM and 10mb graphics memory, the rest is shared with the main system memory.

PS3 has 25.6GB/s memory bandwidth
X360 has 22.4 GB/s memory bandwidth (the 256gb/s is to the 10mb of graphics ram so theres not much point in all that speed anyway)

Its too bad the PS3 looks butt ugly :(

Hey hey hey, I have my copy of Barbie Horse Adventures for my Xbox.

I'll just be getting both. They both look great. As for Nintendo Revolution... Well, even though I grew up with the SNES as my true guardian, I sort of wish they'd lay down and die. Like and old relative.

Don't worry, that's only a concept apparently.

At least it is now. Whether it was before everyone went "Holy fuck that's WRONG" is another question.

sony should know theres a corelation between how good a controller is and how well a console sells. N64 had great games but sold pants, its controller was coincidentally crappy. dreamcast never sold very well and the xbox started selling more units when they released the controller S

The DC controller was quite nice. Not tried the Xbox controller S yet, I'm quite happy with the standard one.

pah. I'll stick with my xbox and pc till the things become more cheap.

In the meantime I'll laugh at my nintendo obsessed housemate trying to persuade me (and possibly himself) that their new console will be anything other than an utter abortion.

Has there been any other recent news on the PS3?

Personally I'm looking forward to this more than the Xbox 360 :D

There's a big article in Edge this month about all the claims the companies have made and what their FACT ratio is.
I've not seen anything new about the games though, which is kind of the important bit.

This. The consoles could have more computing power than god; if all the games look like sex but play like AIDS, who cares about the specs?
