from what i gathered a bit too lately...
Techs:
All Population/CF Techs are good...you get credit discounts for each upgrade.
Metal Tech...you get credit discounts for each upgrade but the CF requirements are increased a bit. So, depending if you need credits or CF at the time of buying you have a choice.
Ziton Tech...no point going past Stage 1 as there are no credit discounts, they use more land and CF.
But basically, If i'd start over...I'd just do:
Pop(all) edit:prolly 3 good enuff so as to use more tech time for ships/ammo
CF(all) edit: ^^
Metal(3)
Ziton(1)
Ships+Ammo(all)
Keep the techs going....1 tech for resources(switch between Pop/CF) and 1 tech for Ships/Ammo...skip metal and ziton for now.
(Although, to keep the techs going...make sure you have enuff resources to research them when they can start.)
Use all your credits to buy POPULATION and only the required CF to do that. Get your planet up to 50% explored...get another planet...do this till you get all your 5 planets. When you get your 4th planet...get Ziton 1 and upgrade to Metal 3.
After you get your 5th planet...just leave it for now. Go back to your first planet and start using all your credits for CF/Metals/Ziton buildings so you can start designing and building ships.
Depending on where you are on Ship/Ammo techs, don't build ships until you have a plan of attack and designs made. As soon as you make them...you will get attacked. I'd suggest making multiple designs as each will get their own attack. Build them evenly like 20each at a time. Look at your Combat Ranking...it will have jump up quite a bit with 20each.
Dont attack empire with high scores...it means they won alot of battles and probably have scions and destroyers...u know the big ships and better ranges to
