DVD +/- RW drive death

DVD +/- RW drive death
I have a Sony DVD +/-RW drive in my system and for somereason it seems to be causing my computer to crash or BSOD when i try to eitehr open itunes with an audio cd in the drive or insert a cd in the drive while itunes is open

also check the hardware manager thingy for other problems

This happens to me on occasion, I have trawled the internet looking for solutions, this resulted in fail so now whenever I have to use itunes I simply curse it's unholy name, kick my PC in the shins and then forget about till it happens again.
Oh, if you do find a solution please let me know
Edit: for reference I have a Lite-on and an NEC drive
