Thankyou and good night

I HATE J00! I HATE THE THINGS THAT J00 LIKE!

ahem. personaly, if only starwars iv, v, and vi happened (i think thats the right ones, starwars, return of the jedi, and empire strikes back) i'd have been happy. i just didnt get SW I and II. if theyd have been released as 'generic space fiction' and not as starwars, my rose tinted goggles would have allowed me to like them. SW III was cool, and i think it stands on its own, as well as being part of the series.

having said that, when the first prequel came out, didnt george lucas suggest there was a further trilogy, set AFTER the empire strikes back?

I believe Lucas abandoned the idea of filming the 3rd trilogy (I know bugger all about the Star Wars universe outside of the films, but I believe Leia has Jedi twins et etc).

I can't see the original cast reprising their roles, and to have other people play them would just be odd (unless Ewan McGregor plays them all).

Then again it would mean lots of money, so he just might try.

You were probably right for the most part. I fall into the Star Trek camp, I have nothing against Star Wars but I wont wank on about it like I would for Star Trek. Star Wars is either pop-corn trash (new ones) or nostalgia laden, rose-tinted awesomeness (old ones).

This was stated as FACT on the school bus back when ROTJ was announced, so it must be true.

I don't know how much of it is Lucas claiming to be like Frank Herbert and have untold prequels and sequels already in his head as part of the films' backstory, or if in another twenty years today's twelve-year-olds will be taking their kids to see Ep 7 and moaning how it's not as good as Eps 1-3. :)

Rumours of episode 7-9 are right from what I've read. It's basicially about luke destroying the dark side forever by discovering that some planet is the focus point by which the dark side spills into our universe, then blowing it up. It's 10-12 that are truely dire. Wizards in star wars ffs!

It all comes down to cultism. No, not the basement, child-sacrificing, mass suicide kind, but the cult following that the original Star Wars films engendered in generation X. I was very much a Star Wars cult fan, even though I never bought any of the merchandise (I was far too hooked on Lego) and watched the films until the VHS cassettes wore out. Therein lay the root of the problem: when making the new films George Lucas faced a dilemma of whether to appeal to his cult fanbase, who were now mostly in their twenties, or whether to target a younger audience and try to develop and whole new generation of fans. He chose the latter, thereby alienating most of his original followers but probably making a lot more money in the long run.
