Vanguard: Saga of Heroes

Post by MORDETH LESTOK »

Release Date: January 2007
Vanguard, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in a fantasy world, is the first product from a development team that includes veteran designers who worked on 1999's EverQuest.
Maybe this'll be the ONE that trully updates/advances EQ1 to something greater...

k...guess you're missing the point...it's not supposed to be original...its an update...to make something that was good...better. Its incorporting stuff that was never put into the original EQ and making it more complete. Hopefully, taking out the bad stuff and adding more good stuff.

btw...is anything original anymore?

yup. I got to this bit:
most recognizable species of high fantasy--the medieval, European kind, with elves, dwarves, halflings, and the aforementioned knights that ride mighty steeds and charge into battle against kobolds, evil wizards, and, of course, the skeletons
and stopped reading. :bored:

Why do some devs seem to think that MMO=fantasy. Its like all the squillion WW2 FPS's there are, and how tactical games are nearly always set in realistic modern settings. FFS, mix it up a bit.

*awaits WW2 styled MMO*

There's that WW2 tank one that I played a bit back. I got bored of it soon enough though.

It's called World War 2 Online oddly enough. Has had a few 5punkers playing for a while. I'm avoiding it cos I can't afford to get addicted to another MMO at the mo.

I somehow missed this post before:
MORDETH LESTOK wrote: btw...is anything original anymore?
simple answer? yes. Auto Assult was an original idea for an MMO (even if it was slightly poorly excecuted). EVE was original, for an MMO. City of Heros was an original setting, even if it was a basic mmo-grind game underneath.

Anyway, im not saying that it has to be totally original, and that it has to be something no one has remotely touched on before. But yet *another* EQ? please god no.

And the fact that they plan it to be like EQ but better is nothing special. Its not like anyone sits down with their dev team and says: "Right, I want it to be like EQ, but more shit."

the fact you have to add "for an MMO" says a lot

Auto ASSHAT? interstate '76...

EVE? Elite onwards...

I loved that game (and yes, I know it was shit). I put the music in my car. You could hit a key and get Taurus to say a poem over the CB. Pure style, pity it was let down by the Mechwarrior engine.

That's Dr. Berk

And i tend to glaze over anything in the same sentence as "EQ" because it's usually some annoying fanboy crap i don't have time for. :)

Guess u just hate EQ. I didn't play EQ for 5years cuz it sucked. Maybe u hate ALL Fantasy games I dont know. But I know people that played the Original EQ was looking forward to EQ2 which turned out to be a crappy non-sequel to EQ1. It would have been nice that Vanguard WAS the EQ2.

The "Devs" ARE from the orignial EQ and yes they would be sitting around trying to figure out how to make EQ better since it was their baby in the first place. Or should there be no sequels to anything ever?

Only thing I agree with u is that CoH was original. I wish they'd mod it out to be Fantasy/War or even put it in Space. Matrix Online used it and was quite sweet for a bit of Sci-Fi.

I just don't get how you can suffer through all the lame ass grinding games like EQ need. I'd be gouging my eyes out if I had to kill that many rats.

heh...yeps...thats the "bad" part I hope they take out. Like its been said..."EQ is a glorified Chatroom". Well, thats true in the "evercamp" part of the game. And if it weren't for alot of good people i hooked up with it would have sucked shit. But we did mix things up and kept going to different places. Different mobs...different strategies.

Gah! no, thats not what I meant *at all*. As (possibly) the most beardy person on 5punk, I quite happily confess a love of fantasy things. I almost soiled my trousers when D&DO was announced, and im looking forward to Warhammer Online immensly (ok, so its another fantasy game, but its a fantasy world from games I loved as a kid/spotty youth). Its not that I dont like fantasy settings, its just that MMO-land is utterly awash with the fuckers. A quick scan through the list at MMONG.com shows that a good half of them are generic sword and sorcery affairs. A good half of the remaining ones are generic sci fi. Its not that I have anything against fantasy or sci-fi, its that its been done to death.

I wouldnt even mind if they spend a little time *thinking* about their fantasy setting. Saga of Ryzom, for example, is a fantasy setting, but it has interesting new settings, in an interesting world. The story behind it has won awards, for gods sake. Practically every other fantasy MMO seems to have been put together with the joys of copy-paste. Elves, magic, demons, blokes with swords, its all the damn same. Any original design thats been put into the game engine is completely obscured by the fact that it looks, superficially, exactly the same as every other MMO in development.
The "Devs" ARE from the orignial EQ and yes they would be sitting around trying to figure out how to make EQ better since it was their baby in the first place. Or should there be no sequels to anything ever?
im going to put this down to american/english language barriers.
What I meant was: Of course they are going to try and make it better than EQ. But *everybody* who is making a new game at the moment is going to be looking at whatever game came before, that is similar to the game they are trying to make, and thinking "how can we make it better".
