1.8 sounds like the adventure update. It'll probably have NPC villages.
The update is pretty big, and will change a lot of how Minecraft is played, focusing on making exploration and combat much more rewarding, and bringing in a bigger sense of adventure to the game.

Already implemented are new complex terrain features, at least one new mob, some interesting new combat mechanics, a new lighting engine, and some experimental new gameplay ideas. To come is more interesting farming, bigger incentives to explore, and npc villages.

Anyone else given this a try yet? Ive been having fun on my SP test world. Pistons are wonky as fuck.

Seems the RPS commenters had the exact same thought as me. Weeping Angels from Dr Who are probably the only thing in recent memory that gave me the willies.

I noticed on Notch's Google+ (and probably Twitter etc) a screenshot of a fortification with a ravine running through it. Looked quite interesting.
