Gamepad camera controls

Post by FatherJack »

This is the current Gamefaqs poll of the day, and I wondered if our PC-honed skills would produce significantly different results.

I'm a bit of a cross between inverted y-axis and standard, depending on the game. FPS or aiming I find inverted y-axis makes the most sense, but in driving games it's easier to nudge the stick up to see further ahead. Inverted x-axis really annoys me.

Standard unless it's a flying game, in which case I prefer pulling back to pitch upwards.

Inverted X-Axis just sounds utterly wrong and I can't think of a game where I've used it.

I'm not sure. I know I have to invert something, but I have to go through all the settings until I find the one that doesn't make my brain melt.

I think I use Invert-X for third-person games, as the camera pivots around the character, so pushing right to see left makes sense.

Having not used a gamepad in a long time until just recently I can't quite remember but I think I'm rather odd.

Firstly depends on 1st or 3rd person. If I'm controlling 1st person it's standard, but maybe inverted y-axis. For 3rd person, controlling the camera, then push right to push the camera right, therefore looking left.

I bought a controller to play Batman: AA and all I know is the settings can't be configured to make it feel right for both 3rd person and zoom/targetting mode. Inverted or not, one view point is always the wrong way around for me.

Edit: Ah, Stoat appears to have the same thing, so maybe not that odd.

I think I always have Y-axis inverted, definitely do in FPS games. Perhaps in third person I just put up with whatever the default is.

It's been a point of discussion between my brothers and me as to why we invert Y-axis. Was there a game years ago that had it this way by default so that's what we got used to? More recent joiners to the world of gaming seem fine with a standard axis setup.

Generally Inverted Y, Because it's correct.

I think It's because of flightsims/joysticks, which I suspect a lot of us grew up (well, aged) on, what with them being good 15 years ago.

I always have to Invert Y whatever the view; 1st person, 3rd person, flying etc.

I had to mime handling a controller to work it out, but yeah, flightsim mode.

I invert Y, although I can see the invert all appeal in third person games. I think it came down to an arbitrary decision when Quake came out, which is the first game I think I played with mouselook. It might have been standard or I may have set it because flight sims used it and therefore it was more hardcore.

Could be. I did play some flight sim games in the Amiga, 20+ years ago.

Wow, I spent ages playing F/A18 Interceptor. I got stuck when you had to drop the rescue pack to the downed crew on Alcatraz Island, but it didn't stop me buzzing the Golden Gate Bridge on a regular basis.

Inverting the y-axis is fine for flight sims, but I just can't deal with it in any other situation. It breaks my brain.
