You rescue bart from his pile of smashed books and go outside.

The church kicks out smoke for five or ten minutes before it starts to clear through the roof tiles, and it's finally safe to walk around in again.

RE: New players, make your characters now, and I'll either pull names out of a hat, or slowly introduce 2 more people over the next couple of games depending on suitability of the story!

Pants, give me a search roll instead of spot if you're looking for things to loot, or for holy symbols.

Spot is used to see people or monsters in hiding, see through a disguise, or read lips.
Search is for finding traps, hidden compartments, and other non-apparent things.

Think of search as "Actively looking" I guess.

[5punk] Grimmie: You can keep the roll
[5punk] Grimmie: Just gimme the search modifier
[5punk] Dog Pants: Oh, 3 then
[5punk] Dog Pants: So 18
Cool, well, with a 18 you poke around the chapel for a little while, and in the glowing embers and sizzling ivory of the organ you find.. A soot smothered stone.
Only as you brush the soot of the stone it soon becomes clear it's a brilliant yellow and orange gem the size of your big toe. Shiny!

The room with the well has been blasted clean of webs, there are two limp, well-cooked centipedes laying coiled up on the floor. The statue is now clean of webs, too - the limestone it's built from is still glowing red from the furnace it was subjected to.

On the back of the stone-sculpted cloak the statue wears is a holy symbol of Pholtus in relief.

Nice, that's a Sunstone! You seem to know the fuck out of your gems.
It's worth about 100gp.

The well's dark and smoky. It looks dry, and empty.

I'm kind of interested, but that character sheet scares me. It looks like you'll have enough anyway, but is there a thread where people can make characters/get help with making them, ready to be used in some future adventure, or would that spoil the stories?

Nope, I'll fit future characters into it some how, story's flexible until I pick up pace on a story arc.
As for a thread, I'm sure the beardy weirdies will be happy to help one-on-one.

Page 6 of the player's handbook has a step-by-step guide on character generation, which is pretty easy to follow.

To clarify, you don't see or hear anything. It looks like it's just a well that's dried up.

I guess so.

I'll assume that while you were off picking locks and getting friendly with spiders, Bart was mashing away at all the holy symbols he could find, books and all.

You finish business at about midday. Assuming too that you head back the way you came, the journey back is wholly uneventful, the most exciting thing that happens is a magpie manages to fly into the side of Bart's shiny armour and knocks itself out.

Make a spot check, boys.

You recognise the area you're in, it's where you felled the squishy brothers.

There are a few patches of caked blood in the mud, but the bodies and their possessions have been removed completely. Dun dun duuun!

Someone probably nicked everything. Orc gizzards might fetch a price. I'll have a quick look around;
