I was made aware of cartograph yesterday, a handy tool which allows you to make a map of the minecraft world you're currently inhibiting.
The link doesn't really provide an explanation, but here's how I used it:

1: Make a separate map for cartographer and unzip the .rar file into it

2: I don't know if this is necessary, but to be on the safe side I placed my minecraft.exe in the same map.

3: Start minecraft, load your world you want to map, pause.

4: Fire up Cartograph, click on the world you want to map and all the other options you want to be visible. (I recommend making a normal-day map first, and later a cave mode map)

5: If you want to see where for example diamond is located, click on heightgray and enter the numerical value for said item, as can be seen here.

6: Drag all of these into a program that allows layers such as photoshop or GIMP.

7: Now you can see your tunnels, buildings and all the caves you missed.

8:...

9: profit!

On reflection I might just continue to hollow out my lava lake. It's quite pretty.
Going to attempt to build my first minecart/tracks this evening.

I've been using Cartograph quite a bit- early on I got completely lost and wanted to see where I'd been.

You can also use it to find dungeons by getting it to render Mossy Cobblestone (#48).

Also, I appear to be engulfing someone's marker tower. It's a two pronged affair marking a mine that leads to a few lava caves, near Joose's underwater chapel. Anyone laying claim to it please object now before it gets eaten by my large floating structure. I didn't mean to do it by the way, but my thing is a lot bigger than I expected.

I took it down as I was doing some downloads. It's up again now. I really should edit that other thread with an "Offline" message, but I forget.

Tonight is probably going to be the last night of hosting for a few days, unless there's an interesting update. I'll put the files up for download if someone else would like to have a go at hosting.

I'm running it on 81.132.205.38.

I don't mind hosting, but I don't know shit about it and my broadband might not give very good performance. It's there though until someone else wants to take over.

What kind of bandwidth does it use? I'm on a limited plan so don't want to go over.

I'm getting logged in, then it's timing out after about 30s.

However my Mac has shat itself twice while running this so I suspect that may not be helping...

Server says no. I mean:

[INFO] FabYak lost connection: Internal exception: java.net.SocketException: Connection reset by peer: socket write error

Anyone know what the problem is? I'll do some searching in a bit.

I suspect it's me, my Mac is a bit of a nancy when it comes to Java

You'll often see that error when the client crashes. There's nothing that can be done about it, that I know of.
