And I'd guess the furnace glitch happens when the client saves the furnace operation to the server, there's a bit of lag. You just need to give it a few seconds.

I've turned off monsters in the hope that it'll remove the unpredictable explosive monsters/chickens. The monsters don't seem to have much point yet.

Smelting doesn't work quite right yet, you can lose stuff so don't drop a big stack in the furnace.

Every time I see Creeper art they appear more and more terrifying.
Do you think they were made to look like nothing in particular on purpose, so people would associate the feeling they get of an approaching creeper with its figure, and thus make it more frightening than it is?

The "making of ..." suggests he did. He worked out a fairly efficient way of doing it. Also he discussed the choice of structure with his wife!
