That's because it is, iirc.FatherJack wrote:I got it in a bundle a while back and still got no further than the first level. I got to the last level in DX2...and it looks like that cursed DX1 first level.
I don't get why people hate the first level of Deus Ex so much. It's not particularly hard if you're capable of any modicum of patience.

Did you read the PCG 10 year recap of it?deject wrote:That's because it is, iirc.

They came to the conclusion that it's because from the first level the game thrusts forwards the core of Deus Ex: Get given objectives, get given tools, and then get set loose. There's no hand holding or direction really.
I think most people who don't like that level is because it really does drop you in it, and most people probably don't do the tutorial that's available from the main menu, hence the confusion and awkwardness.

I think it's precisely because of the tutorial that the first level is a massive chore. In the tutorial you get all the toys, can shoot straight and can sneak. It perfectly illustrates the myriad ways one can complete an objective. You are heldheld to a degree, but the final bit can be done any number of ways. It's an exciting preview of what looks like a great game.
But in the first level, you have to choose your equipment and skills, elevating each one to the mighty level of sucking only slightly less at them. Added to that, picking what looks good at first doesn't help you at all later on.
There's a door you can't hack, bots you can't kill, sentry guns that pop out when you're not sneaky enough, and innumerate guards that descend on you when you fuck up.
Each of these lessons are learned piecemeal, as failure pretty much means a reset and reselection of tools, and that interminable walk back across boringness to try the next iteration of your tactics.
Eventually you've forgotten what your actual objective is, indeed don't even care. You've finally succeeded at the seventh attempt to get past some wiggly line of electricity to find only a health kit on the other side. It's when you say "Fuck you, game. Fuck you."

That is the thing though, the bot can be killed, the guards can be eliminated, all of that it's just that people do not want to take the time to do it the right way to avoid lots of trouble. Everything in the Statue level can be done with relative ease, even doing it without killing the NSF guys.

I've only tried the tutorial so far and failed at that. All was pretty straight forward until the end with the patrolling bot and the bridge you had to lower. The bot started spazzing at one end of the room and constantly turning around so I could sneak past. I tried to let it kill me so I could try again but apparently I had turned me into an immortal meat pile. So I slowly slithered to the end of the area.
I'll probably try the tutorial again so I can see what the game expects of me before taking the plunge. With graphical improvements installed of course.

I've reached Hong Kong and Deus Ex has proven itself to be a bit lacist. There are some very dodgy Chinese accents. Still very enjoyable and it's taking quite a while as I keep re-doing parts over and over again, to see the effect of different approaches, etc. My chosen tactic is explosive stealth. If a stealthy, non-lethal approach fails, or just isn't as fun, the rockets and grenades come out. There is no in between.
I appreciate I've contradicted myself from another thread, but if I hadn't watched someone play through the first level and understood what the developers wanted me to do I'd have probably given up in frustration again. As it was I sailed through it, sailing very quietly, in the shadows, with a stun prod.
