Yup, which I think is the biggest problem with the whole debate. Just to be clear, I also think piracy is, in general, a bad thing. If I could think of a magic way to stop piracy, I would totally do that, because for every pirate that has no intention of buying and therefore isnt actually hurting anyone, theres a fuckload of people pirating *instead* of buying. I dont think anyone here is arguing that the second option is ok.deject wrote:I think we're arguing semantics if you cut through all the obfuscation anyways.
Trouble is, as soon as piracy gets mentioned, people go "omg, theft!". Which it isnt. Not saying its better or worse, just saying its not the same thing.
EDIT: Oh, and anyway, my original point stands: They are not going to lose as many sales of this to piracy as they are to being cuntbags.

Not trying to provoke argument here, but why is it that any debate on the forum is presumed to be an argument, and therefore ends up being filled with people going "ooh, shush you, cant we all just get along?"
As someone who quite enjoys a bit of debate from time to time (note, debate!=argument), its kinda irritating.
It's not a debate or an argument, it's people saying the same thing over and over again. I'm not saying shush because I want you to get along, you're already doing that. I'm saying shush because a) I thought the Dr Evil thing would be funny, and b) the whole piracy thing is fucking tedious, nothing new is being said.
And you're the first person to use the eyeroll smilie in the whole thing

I didn't notice this the first time, but I resent that. I try to moderate by letting people vent things that are bothering them, even if it means letting it get a little heated. That way everything is relolved and out in the open and resentment isn't left to fester. I believe I rarely step in as moderator, whether it be an argument or a discussion, and I like to think it's the right way to do the job here. I've certainly never been accused of over-moderating before, and I've never considered myself guilty of it. There's always the possibility that by voicing an opinion as a forum member, it may be interpreted as my telling people what to do as a moderator, but I'd like to think I make it obvious enough when I'm speaking in an official capacity.Joose wrote:why is it that any debate on the forum is presumed to be an argument

Sorry Doggers, that wasn't a personal dig, and certainly wasnt a comment on forum moderation. What I mean is a lot of threads where people disagree on something devolve into kitten-spam and the like. Its like people have an allergy to discussions, and think that people cant disagree without without getting upset.
Ive probably overreacted in this case a little, its just something thats been irritating me a little for a while.

Ah, I see. In which case sorry for misunderstanding, although I know better than to think it was meant as a personal dig. Yeah, that's probably just down to people wanting to keep this a happy place, and I expect too many of us have seen other forums where any argument quickly degenerates into flame wars. Myself incuded, and now I mention it I can see that's what prompted my 'shh' posts here. I stand by two things though; I still hate the piracy discussion, and I still think nothing new is ever said in it.
