I love the Mechwarrior/Battletech universe, but I've never really played a game that did it justice. Battletech (1988) was a decent representation of the universe, but was a bit primitive. Mechwarrior 2 and its sequels looked the part but never quite felt right. Mechcommander looked right but was missing something, probably more of an RPG element. All were good games, but none quite hit the spot for me.

A mmong based in themechwarrior world would be fanbloody tastic.
You got the IS and the clans as your two sides. Different weapons, different tactics and a million different classes and chassis types.
I'll take a devestator 3 with er-ppcs and heavy gauss cannons for sniping thankyouverymuch.
This has been the topic of conversation all afternoon. Forget your tank/dps/healer combo, your role will be dictated by your loadout. A direct control third person viewpoint, with a combat system to Eve, including ECM, command mechs calling in air support or supply vehicles, long range missile mechs, close up machinegunners. It could all be done on a global cooldown system (reload or cooldown times), heat management would act similarly to mana/cap. People could create houses or clans.HereComesPete wrote:

The specifics of progression are open to personal preference. I'd prefer a world where factions are PvP driven, but which individuals could work inside without having to get involved in the PvP politics. Kind of like Warcraft within Eve.
I could wax lyrical all day I suppose, but it probably won't be done. I just love the idea of taking my own custom mech out with a few 5punkers and causing some havoc in a persistant world.

Did you ever play Planetside? Not exactly what you are describing but, in places, quite close.Dog Pants wrote:

I didn't, but I read an article recently that mentioned how the combat worked. All the 'turns' that all MMOs currently have to use were done fairly invisibly apparently. Interesting idea, I'd like to see more of that sort of thing. Tabula Rasa did a similar thing too I think. So much potential wasted there.

PS was pure online whin. From a gaming standpoint, it is probably the best online experience I have ever had. The big base battles were absolutely epic at times. Hundreds of people, lag-free, dropships, hover tanks, mechs, infantry, stealthers, aerial dog-fights. All the things MMO's promise these days , yet never pull off. Then, SoE got their mitts on it and faffed around with it too muchDog Pants wrote:I didn't, but I read an article recently that mentioned how the combat worked. It says 'in-game footage' in grey at the bottom right.Dog Pants wrote:
I love Mechwarrior intros. I wonder if the first person shots are in-game footage. Modern consoles and PCs are certainly capable of it.
They seem a bit ponderous compared to the Mecha/Robo/Battle Suit battles shown in anime.
I played a demo of some of the earlier games, I found the PC version hard to control, a more recent XBox version was a lot easier but online play a little repetitive. I loved Mechcommander, though.
In general I question their effectiveness as a fighting machine - they take too long to about-face and that eject mechanism seemed ultimately pointless. At least everyone gets one though, unlike BF2142.
