If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

:above: Media Player Classic is lovely.

VLC isn't as painful to use as it used to be, and has lots of great features if you can find out how to make them work. I keep it as a backup.

This, mostly. It plays silly buggers without fettling on some of the more random stuff I've dredged up from the internets but generally has everything shiny and happy straight from the get go.

I use the Homecinema variant of MPC. It's mostly the same, but it adds things like video decode acceleration and such.

As for codecs, CCCP or ffdshow-tryouts are good.

I think CCCP has the Homecinema version of MPC, not sure how often they update MPC as the one in cccp is still from last year.

I also use the CCCP pack.

However, I'm switching from MPC to VLC as my main video player, it's not as good for dvd's I find, but works well and I love the extended volume contol of 0 to 200%, as I don't like fiddling with my main volume all the time.

Used to use the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, but switched to VLC a while ago.

It can go all the way up to 400% if you use the mouse wheel, I kinda like that since 24 and House tends to be a little quiet even on 200%.

I used to swear by MPC but VLC has superseded it as my main video player. Especially now I'm using a Mac. It just works without faffing.

REal Media Player

Media Player Classic is the best media player codec collection you've ever seen.
As long as the gui doesn't matter it still the best app for multimedia.
I hope that someone could redeveloped the media player classic for visualizations and skins like windows media player.

It didn't help his case that he had lastfm, skype and flickr filled in but linking to non-existant accounts.
