I installed FL and a load of 3rd party stuff recently (Star Wars, B5 etc). It was mildly amusing for a while playing with wabbit and one or two others, but it sadly lacked any sort of longevity. Otherwise a pretty good game.
Other than the unmentionable space based MMO that we're all very aware of now, are there actually any others out there that have, for one reason or another, not made it into the limelight? I can't really think of any...

I love Freelancer mostly for the single player part. It was proper brilliant. I never got the chance to play much multiplayer, and I've never played EvE soI have no idea which one would be more fun.friznit wrote:I installed FL and a load of 3rd party stuff recently (Star Wars, B5 etc). FreeSpace. Bloody brilliant. I dare say it hasn't stood the test of time very well, mind.friznit wrote:Other than the unmentionable space based MMO that we're all very aware of now, are there actually any others out there that have, for one reason or another, not made it into the limelight? I am curious, but has anyone here heard of Trade Wars 2000?
It was text based, but could be played by multiple players simultaneously over bulletin board sites. You could build space stations, trade, settle planets and quite a few other things I've not seen in games to date, but I was reminded of it when I first heard of Eve.
There was an interesting dark element as well, hidden within the space stations. You could enter hidden locations and get info on how to rob space stations, clear your name, and smuggle items. It was an interesting part of the game I am surprised isn't a part of Eve, since it was to some effect a part of FL.

FreeSpace 2 source was released, there's a big modding scene.....andddddd......some kind people have released high res textures, redone the 3D engine and remoddled and updated all the main ships.friznit wrote:Oh yes, Freespace and Freespace 2. There was a really rather good Babylon 5 total conversion for FS2 which had a fully coop multiplayer campaign (not quite MMO, but at least more than singe player). But yeah, when I fired it up a few weeks back it was a little too grainy
It looks quite alright now, and used to rape my x800 GTO in nebulas due to the masssive amount of particle effects.

Dark Star One and X3: Reunion promised to be offline Eve crossed with Freelancer/Elite but ultimately seemed to fail for me.
DSO's flying was a little too Elite/X-Wing/TIE Fighter for me - Freelancer showed how mouse flight can be fun, and hasn't been matched in my view. In DSO you had to hold a mouse button down a lot, which was a nightmare if you had two screens.
X3 had promise, but was ultimately too big for me. While the back of the box had me dreaming of owning huge space stations, planets and massive ships - it quickly became apparent that you would have to spend a similar amount of time to achieve this as you would to set up a POS in 0.0 space in Eve. Except you would be on your own. No friends, no help and no-one to show off to.

Trade Wars was great fun. I used to play it on my friends BBS over my 400 baud modem. I had found it somewhere on the interwebs again and played it for a few months till I lost interest in it. It's one of those games where you have so many moves per day, so it takes a bit to get up and running properly. You work your way up or down the ladder and become a beloved bounty hunter or an ebil pirate with a big bounty on your head. Lot's of trading and fighting, and quite a few ship classes to work through. It's kinda like the MUD version of EvE.
I never looked at freelancer or the X series, may have to give em a go, now FreeSpace, heh, I haven't thought of that since my 286.
