Wii outselling PlayStation 3 'six to one'

ImageConsidering that some retail locales in America are still having trouble keeping a fresh supply of Wii consoles in stock (whilst the PlayStation 3 units tend collect thin layers of dust), it's no surprise to see such dramatic sales figures surface. Sure enough, Enterbrain's latest report demonstrates that Nintendo's darling moved into 270,974 new households in June, while only 41,628 PS3s were sold in the same timeframe; just to compare, the even older Xbox 360 was able to sell 17,616 units. That brings the overall sales figures to date for Nintendo to nearly 2.76 million, while Sony has yet to break the magical one million in units sold. But don't count Sony out just yet -- it's coming back, remember?

Be interested to hear how many 360s got sold last month in the UK. I've uncovered a couple of people at work who did exactly what I did, and bought one in order to play Forza.

IMO it's pretty stupid comapring sales of Wiis and PS3s. It's like comparing sales of vauxhaul corsas with those of bugati veyrons.

Of COURSE 6 times as many wiis are being bought, they cost a 6th of the price of PS3 not entirely accurate maybe, but you get the point, every PS3 sold nets sony at least twice as much money as the sale of a single wii does for nintendo.

In the long run i think the ps3 will out sell the wii because a lot of people are 'ooh shiny graphics'. At the moment the PS3 is just too expnsive for most, but as Sony are able to reduce their costs, by buying larger bulks of components, and increasin the supply of components they will pass some of the saving on to the consumer and the price of the PS3 will come down.

Meanwhile you have the Wii, which doesnt have next gen graphics, doesn't play bluray, doesn't even play standard DVDs. It is a solid little console and great for family games and quirky control schemes, but in the long run PS3 is going to win out.
Also the Wii has barely ANY online multiplayer games yet, which is pretty daft, considering that PS3 and eggbox 360 have had online multiplayer from launch

The thing is, Sony is losing money on every PS3 they sell due to high development and manufacturing costs. Nintendo are using cheaper hardware and recouped their development costs long ago, and rumour has it that they're actually making a profit on the Wii hardware.

Sony is making a huge loss on each PS3 they sell. I think your prediction that the PS3 will eventually outsell the Wii is going to be proven wrong. Look at the Nintendo DS, it's the best selling piece of kit out there by far. People want cheap, fun consoles. The Wii lets you have fun with your mates, and it's less than half the cost of the PS3. Also, you have to consider to fully enjoy the shiny PS3 graphics, you need a fucking expensive TV to boot, which most people don't have.

This. Not only are Sony making a loss now, but imagine how it will affect their figures when they're forced to drop the price in order to shift more units.

I have to be honest, I know fuck all about this Blu-Ray stuff, but to be honest I don't care - and I doubt the general public will either.

In years to come I think this will make an interesting case story: how Sony, with the amazing sales of the PS2, managed to take a hugely successful and recognisable brand and turn it into a highly polished turd.

Looking at the £400 prices tag on the PS3 on Amazon, it doesn't seem that expensive, given that's 360+HDDVD money, but I don't really see a reason to buy one just yet. Perhaps next March for GT5.

I've got no preference for one over the other, I simply buy what's required to play games I want to play. They all do roughly the same badgers per second in my view.

All I know is that currently all the consoles suck. Maybe in a few years time when they have a bunch of games (and a cheaper price tag) I'll be interested, but as of right now, eh, I couldn't care less.

My instinct tells me that the PS3 will out-sell and out-influence the Wii eventually. The Wii has had a head start, but I think the novelty will wear off pretty soon unless Nintendo start releasing more games that appeal to gamers. The Wii will always hold the niche market of a 'family game' console (Nintendo have sort of held this title for ages anyway), but in my opinion the more generic PS3 will appeal to more gamers in the long run.

I wouldn't like to predict how things will turn out in the long term and as far as I know Nintendo have never sold their consoles at a loss, unlike the relative new-comers MS and Sony.

Nintendo's continuation is pretty much guaranteed, even if they are turning off the hardcore gamer demographic. But with the PS3 Sony seems to be appealing to the hardcore gamer and the Sony fan rather than the more casual player. So it's probably going to be down to the former to prove whether Sony's strategy pays out. I consider myself to be a serious gamer and I see no reason to fork out for Sony's shiny new machine just yet.

The gamers I was referring to aren't just the hardcore ones. I'm thinking more the guys who have a console sat with their video and DVD player under the telly, and who play it with their mates on a friday night, or if their wife goes out. They're not hardcore gamers by any means, but the average bloke now (I'm not trying to be sexist here by the way, just an observation) is far more au fait with video games than he's ever been. It's this demographic the PS3 will appeal to, as the PS2 did, and the PlayStation effectively started. The Wii, I think, appeals more to people who enjoy the novelty (like me) and people who don't really do video games but see this as more of a social game than a video game (like Mrs Pants).

:above: Hard.

Which is why it's selling so fucking well, even if (currently) the novelty of the solo gaming wears off after a few months, you still have a good console for twatting about with mates and family, While it's by no means an 18-26 year old male's idea of a great console, it does appeal to everyone else, and brings gaming to the masses.

Not to mention that anyone can use a wiimote, unlike most console controllers it's good for most hand sizes. (I can't hold playstation or gamecube controllers, many people can't hold the xbox original controller comfortably)

Bah, this whole argument is stupid. The internets should give it a rest and take a look at the figures in about 4/5 years time.

It's not an argument, it's a reasonable and logical discussion.

if i were to say "PS3s are teh suck and all hoo own them r ghey" that might spawn an argument.

Let's see. :)

I see no argument, while I might lol at Sony's fuckups, I'll have a PS3 this time next year.

GTA I'll buy, but on the 360, as I already have one - from the few unbiased comparisions I've seen of the hardware capabilities, and the evidence of my own eyes my experience will be indistinguishable from that of a PS3 owner.

GT5 is March, so I'm guessing that's when I'll be buying - not if, but when. Play have FFXIII as September, Amazon as next July - I guess the less optimistic option is the one to put one's faith in.

Not much else has really jumped out at me, and I have friends who'll be early adopters so I can check out games in the interim. Did the same with the 360, and games like Dead Rising, Kameo, Saint's Row and Enchanted Arms have made me glad I avoided a year of frustration.

I'm disappointed in the Wii's volume of games, and haven't actually plugged the console in in my own house for months, but it remains, like the DS, a fun toy I take around friends houses to play with. It's not all it could be, and I start to wonder if it ever will be - the GameCube had some brilliant, unique games, but just not enough of them.

Still, the Wii wins at playing Zelda, the 360 wins at Forza and the PS3 will win at GT5. System-agnostic gamers win all as they have (at least) three great games to play.

Argument was probably the wrong word to use but I was talking about the internet in general (I'm looking at you, Engadget!), not 5punk.

Anyhoo, I really like the Wii, however, this is because I had a fun time playing it with friends. However, I wouldn't enjoy Wario Ware, Dragon Ball Z or Wii Play/Sports alone, which is how I play most of my video games.

This doesn't mean I won't ever own one though. If games like ResiEvil 4 do well for single player on the Wii, along with other games I'll probably invest in one.

But I'll stick with my PS3 for now, which I'm really enjoying. Sony's foibles do make me "LOL" as well though.

Me too. I've played demos of Kameo and Perfect Dark and they are terrible. Shiny but awful to play. I'm trying to play Dead Rising at the moment and, while the zombie stuff is cool and very well done, the rest of the game has left me bemused.
