Questions questions questions

Post by Lateralus »

As an official n00b©™ I'm going to pester you fully qualified experts with some questions!

Numero Un: What are the commonly used codes people keep using in the chat box such as timeleft, rank, votemap etc etc? I keep seeing various things popping up and think "oh, I was just wondering that", but rarely manage to catch the code used to find out.

Deux: Which weapons should I use? I can't decide on which weapon types are best, and not knowing the maps very well (if at all...) means that I'm left guessing anyways! Which are the best of each weapon type? Not sure how much of it is personal preference or if there are any guns that are clearly better than others. I know a lot of it depends on the map in question, but some sort of overview would be nice

Trois: What tactics do you guys generally use? Again, I know how that would vary depending on the map and team, but do you tend to run around as one big hunting pack, in pairs or on your own or wot?

Quatre: Its says in the intro to the server something about altering game settings too much to give an unfair advantage; does this mean that everyone else has tweaked their game and thats why they're better than me - meaning its nothing to do with my lack of skill/knowledge/practice/luck?

Cinq: Is there a way of presetting different weapon combinations to choose for each map or is it just a case of choosing from the menu at the start of each map and then pressing F2 from then on?

Thats it for now, but I'm sure I'll be back for another exciting round of Prime n00bister's Question Time!!11onehundredandeleven

Ok, this is gonna be messy, but bear with it.

timeleft : how much time left on the level
nextmap: the next map
rank: your rank in relation to others
statsme: more detailed stats
top10: displays the 10 best ranked players
Deux: Which weapons should I use? I can't decide on which weapon types are best, and not knowing the maps very well (if at all...) means that I'm left guessing anyways! ooh, difficult.

for most stuff, the 3 main assault rifles for each team are best, being

ct: clarion, m4a1, bulpup
t: IDF defender, ak47, sg553.

mostly the m4a1 and the AK47 are the best all rounders, play with them all though :D
Trois: What tactics do you guys generally use? Again, I know how that would vary depending on the map and team, but do you tend to run around as one big hunting pack, in pairs or on your own or wot?
whatever happens really, depends on the players
Quatre: Its says in the intro to the server something about altering game settings too much to give an unfair advantage; does this mean that everyone else has tweaked their game and thats why they're better than me - meaning its nothing to do with my lack of skill/knowledge/practice/luck?
not at all, mostly it's just a case of covering our own backs seeing as the servers are public.

in short, practice more, sort TS, if you want jinxx and i can give you a runthrough to help get started
Cinq: Is there a way of presetting different weapon combinations to choose for each map or is it just a case of choosing from the menu at the start of each map and then pressing F2 from then on?
i'm not sure actually, but you could use weapon buy binds.

for example, i can press home on my keyboard, that'll automatically buy me an m4a1 or an ak47, depending on the team you're on

That's some useful info there, and to be honest, all of those questions I have (and still do) asked people.

What you sometimes find Lateralus is that people who have played CS for years and years, seem to forget how frustratingly annoying the game is towards new people.

The game type/mode is completely different from that of any other game I've played, the weapon buying system is frankly a pain in the arse (IMO), and the lack of bomb sites appearing on the radar makes matters even more confusing.

All I'd say is struggle on with it for a bit, as nearly everyone I know seems to then really love the game, however my own personal feelings towards the game seem to have dropped somewhat recently.

I'm not dissing the game in any way, as it's one of, if not the most played online games in the world, however it has a very steep learning curve. If you listen to the likes of Berk & Jinxx etc... then you'll be killing people in no time, as opposed to wondering why you've fired 10 rounds into someone, and they shoot you in the head with 1 shot

I suggest using Auto-buy to start with, until you're more used to the game. But also browse the shop menus in those few seconds you have at the start of each round, then autobuy, so you can see what's available. That way you wont be left behind, you'll get a defusal kit if you're CT, kevlar if you can afford it and a very good, all round weapon, especially the AK47, my fav. Once you get a bit more comfy with the game have a play with the other weapons.

every time a new map comes out i run around for a bit on my own, then wack on some bots and see what happens

i find the bots good for learnimng, as they tell you what every location is called and identify contact points

then it's off to teh internet to get raped by a 16 year old with too much free time :P

PS: i could knock you out some weapon buy binds if you wanted

PPS: i wit they didn't get rid of the command menu

Well, this usually comes down to personal preference. I'd agree with the others that the main rifles usually do the job justice. I'd like to point out that too many people underestimate the power of the might SMG, perfect for close-quarter maps such as Office and Italy. The only thing I can really suggest, is try everything, twice. You can only really get a feel for what a certain gun does for you, depending on your playing style.
Lateralus wrote:Trois: What tactics do you guys generally use? Again, I know how that would vary depending on the map and team, but do you tend to run around as one big hunting pack, in pairs or on your own or wot?
As previously said, it differs from player to player. Personally I let someone know if I'm 'tailing' them of 'covering' them from behind on teamspeak, and they change their playing style accordingly. Likewise, when I've said that, a few other people may tag along and let us know.. Good communication (As a few of us know) Is the key to good tactics, no matter what they are.
Lateralus wrote:Is there a way of presetting different weapon combinations to choose for each map or is it just a case of choosing from the menu at the start of each map and then pressing F2 from then on?
Not that I know of.. You can buy a lot of crap, and then go back to the buy menu and click on the "Save" button on the bottom right, near to some pre-bound combinations. For example, I've got the "M4A1 and Kevlar" option bound, for when I dont want a defusal kit and grenade to go with it because of monetary problems.

Hope Grimmie helped!

well, one way i used to play the game when i first started (and still do on ocasion) is just get a pistol and follow everybody else. shooting well with a pistol is a good skill to have, and also you can pick up your dead team mates/ enemies guns as you run over them and try them out too, which helps you to practice with almost any gun you find. also it is cheap, and you will always have armor/nades :) i suggest either the desert eagle or compact pistol for this

and also im usualy better using pistols as a result of this, so its always handy to have a secondary weapon you can actualy use!

This sounds like a clever sort of thing to do. I shall have to try it I think, for a while at least!

my favorite bind buys kevlar+helmet and a deagle with ammo.

The best way to learn the best way to use a gun is to just keep using it. pay attention to your crosshairs, watch how close you have to be, see how motion affects your aim and such. I am only good with the deagle because I spent many hours learning its quirks. As for rifles, they generally perform the same, but some lose accuracy very fast, so you have to learn the limits of your gun.

Also, try playing on servers with the smallest pings possible to start. The "hitbox" in counter strike source is almost never where you'd expect. Usually you have to shoot behind people to hit them. This gets worse with lag, so smaller lags don't make you adjust as much.

a really fun way to get kills as a CT is to buy a TMP (buy menu > #3 > #1) and get in close with the T's. The TMP has an eerie knack for getting headshots while you're spraying bullets everywhere. However, this tactic will usually get you killed, so you ideally should take out 2 or 3 in a TMP rush. Many times I have rushed the double doors on de_aztec and tagged two terrorists in the head in the middle of the whole terrorist team. As a bonus, you can talk shit about taking out a bunch of guys with the "worst" submachine gun in the game. It's pure gold.

i'm still learning the game myself, (as you can tell by my shameful preformance).
but i'm definetly improving. money mostly dictates what weapons i'll buy but i try to mix and match, see what ones i'm good with and what ones i'm poo with. (i'm using a lot of snipers because i'm poo at using them and trying to get better)
and i find i get the most kills and last longer if i run in 2's or 3's that way its not like shooting fish in a barrell and i've still got a little cover.

Just thought of another tip: headphones

if you havent got dolby 10.1 or whatever, they really help with hearing footsteps and the direction they're coming from

He's right you know!

The only downside is that you may "listen" too much, and then end up shooting your teammates just because you heard foot steps  (Well, I do anyway)

i find that sometimes headphones can be misleading, for some reason i hear footsteps through both speakers when there to the left of me and sometimes i hear them on the opposite of where they really are, other times there not. could just be my headphones.
also, sometimes i'm in the mood to listen to some music while playing.

the key is QUALITY headphones. You need to spend at least $50 or like £30, and that's bear minimum. those throwaways won't help you at all.
