Post by News Reader »

ImageValve's Steam content distribution system has apparently been hacked. The culprit allegedly got deep enough into the system to steal credit card information and financial information on Valve. DailyTech reports the hacker known as "MaddoxX" broke in and obtained:
  • -Screenshots of internal Valve web pages

-A portion of Valve's Cafe directory

    -Error logs

    -Credit card information of customers

    -Financial information on Valve
MaddoxX posted the information he obtained on an anti-Steam website. He has also threatened to release a spreadsheet of the credit card information. We've contacted Valve for a statement on this alleged breach in security.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Okay, apart from the fact steam doesn't keep Credit card info for normal purchases and the fact the part that has allegedly been hacked is only their cybercafe program (which may store card info, dunno)

I still cry bull. or at worst very little real data compromised.

Pretty much steam related scaremongering until we can get a confirmation from anyone.

There are some in the RAR linked from his page http://emp.damage-web.net/viewtopic.php?p=62590

I
cut out the card numbers, but in one of the files, he says:

Code: Select all

I am NOT cutting out the CC numbers, fuck you VALVe secure your shit...
This in light of the comments at the foot of his page from concerned café owners who understand his efforts are designed to hurt valve, and hate them more than he does, but the selfish little shitbag has likely put a bunch of these mostly privately-owned ventures out of business, regardless of whether he actually has real info or not.

What a cupcake, really. It's not like he's sticking it to the man by showing a load of CC numbers of small, independently owned cyber cafes.

These fuckers need to understand what they're 'fighting' for.

Fucking script kiddy cuntrags.

I don't understand why anyone hates Valve anyway. I bet it's just a case of a lame pirate who is angry that Valve's system makes it a little harder to pirate their games.

In all honesty, this is just retarded. Stealing a bunch of credit card info isn't going to screw over valve, it's going to screw over whoever the credit cards belong to.

I suspect the cafe owners do have their credit card numbers retained, how else are they to take the money monthly or at whatever interval.

Buying a one off game wouldn't require that.

However having just downloaded the files this cupcake has posted I can see credit card details in them. Whether they are real or not who knows.

Steam: Not Hacked.
Update:
1UP has had the chance to talk to Valve software's Doug Lombardi about the so-called breach. He says that "There has been no security breach of Steam, the alleged hacker gained access to a third-party site that Valve uses to manage the commercial partners in its Cyber Café program. This Cyber Café billing system is not connected to Steam. We are working with law enforcement agencies on this matter, and encourage anyone with more information to e-mail us at Catch_A_Thief@valvesoftware.com."

This should hopefully reassure any end users worried that their credit card information has been compromised. However, if you're a Cyber Café owner and haven't already cancelled your credit card -- get onto your bank as soon as possible.
