RAR can be quite efficient...

I've heard that 7-zip can do better, but no one uses it.

as deject said, RAR is bloody efficient used right, and bsps are totally uncompressed, so have a lot of potential for shrinkage.

Damn right bloody efficient!! I mean, winZips normally take about 3megs off the file size! O.O If only we used RARs at college, it would be so easier to take in/email work.

the zip version (as sent to the providers) was more like 7.5mb.

mostly just a case of BSPs being very, very compressable.

i'll try with 7-zip too

ok, you made me do this

all files archived at "best" or "ultra"

7z (LZMA) = 4,563KB
7z (Bz2) = 5,938KB
rar = 5,627KB
zip = 7,861KB

whatever, most people can handle rar files, so that's what i'll use :P

I did a few tests too:

lha = 8,227KB
tar.z = 11,979KB
tar.gz = 7,852KB
tar.bz2 = 5,902KB
sitx = 6,857KB

I declare 7z (LZMA) the winner!

indeed, i think it's mostly due to rar being pretty good as is.

rar does support huge files, which is why people moved away from zip originally, so there's no real need for people to move from rar to 7zip just yet.
