Stonehearth - Townscrafterrariafortress?

Post by tandino »

A friend of mine just posted a link to this on Facefuck and it checks a lot of boxes for me. Lying somewhere between Towns, Minecraft and what I imagine Dwarf Fortress to be like, It look pretty good. It's just made its kickstarter goal too so it'll be out around the end of this year. Here she is - Stonehearth. I think I could easily lose a good few hours to this.

I like the look of that, on the scale of town builder complexity it looks like it sits between Towns and Dwarf Fortress. The problem with a lot of them is a lack of complexity and depth, and really only DF manages to capture that well. I'm glad people keep making them though, hopefully one will hit that sweet spot (or indeed get finished). This looks to have a nice scale to it, but my concern is that all those building in the city screenshots are cosmetic, just put there to make the game look busy.

It does look jolly and unfortunately for me that's what makes this meh. If it had guns and bombs and fire and death in some dark and horrible setting I would probably play the shit out of it. I guess I'm too broken and twisted to enjoy nice things any more!

A town builder in a modern or near future setting? Now there's a thought. How about a Mad Max-like post apocalyptic game where you scavenge for materials to build your settlement and defend it from raiders?

I would play that. Or the towns of fallout expanded into a separate living entity. Or something like westworld with rogue cyborgs and different time settings.

Possibly, but that looks more RPG than town manager.

Oh! Maia! That's a sci-fi colony builder. Looking good too. I actually have alpha access to it but I want to wait until it's a bit more complete in case I burn out on it before it really gets going. Apparently there are interesting AI at work, for example chickens who will try to find somewhere warm to roost. Like reactors. Although apparently there's a bug in the current version that puts lava at the top of their priority list, since it's the hottest thing in the game.
