5punk Award (Om)Nominations - MP Game of the Year

Post by Dog Pants »

I'm starting a little early this year to give us plenty of time to get the nominations in. Which will probably mean a flurry in the next few days then we'll all forget about it, but whatever, I can hope. So post here to suggest entries for the 5punky Multiplayer Game of the Year. Nominees will be games which have caused great amounts of 5punky hilarity and getting together, which is really what we're all about. Votes will be placed in the new year.

TF2 - it had a real renaissance this year and I started to enjoy it again. Mann vs Machine was good for a short while too.

You know, I really can't remember what else we've played.

DayZ for Arma II, yes it was technically a mod, but it was really enjoyable and on the times we played together.
5punkers trying to meet up while avoiding zombies and then almost ambushing each other or people constantly falling over at the most inopportune of times due to lack of blood were rather amusing.

Dota 2 - we actually tried tactics for a while!

Planetside 2 - not played it yet but it's certainly grabbed quite a following.

Also, Borderlands 2 was rather fun in multi-player.

did we ever actually play more than session of this together? i know a few people where dropping in and out of games but i dont think we ever actually got further than the first boss together

i have to second dota 2

i think guild wars 2 also deserves a mention as when we have actually got together its been great fun with the usual shenanigans

beyond those teef and planetside though i dont think there have really been any regular 5punky multiplayer games i cant think of this year :?

I played a few sessions with various peoples. Kind of a shame you couldn't have all the enemies that 4 player had on your own, it was mental.

Borderlands 2
Mass Effect 3 (though I suspect I'll be the only one even thinking about this)

There have been some great MP games played on 5punk this year. Last year's winner, BEEF3, was unceremoniously knocked from the top spot early last year when it started to become clear that the balancing was badly misjudged in favour of air power (again), and being a very similar proposition from equally late in the year Planetside 2 is showing early signs of going the same way. TEEF did make a great comeback, and will probably continue to do so, and DOTA 2 has proven to be entertaining when played with 5punkers. Guild Wars 2 has eaten vast amounts of my time despite not straying too far from the beaten MMO path, and World of Tanks, officially released this year, has remained a great game.

All things considered, though, I can't remember another this year which has grabbed me and other 5punkers in such a way as to bring us together on TS howling with laughter at our incompetence as Planetside 2. I may end up eating my words early next year as I did with Battlefield 3, but from where I am now it certainly is the multiplayer game of the year for me.

Oh yeah, I guess I should say Guild Wars 2 too, as it's the first MMO in some considerable time (probably since GW1 actually) that I've actually leveled a character up past level 10, albeit mostly on my own. I like the world, I like the races and the ease of joining in on community events.

I'm going for dota2 although teef did catch my interest again.
Also Saints Row 3 for being utterly bonkers and a silly amount of fun

GW2 probably. I saw more 5punkers in that at any one time than any other game, including Planetside 2 FOTM edition.

Although we did suffer from a thankfully short lived OTTD resurgence at one point.

GW2 from me as well, though that's partly arbitrary as I didn't play the others. I secretly have DOTA2 but have never claimed the gift as I don't want to become a person that plays DOTA2, but not so long ago I was a person who was a bit reticent about bearding so that could change. I played a fair bit of Planetside and Tribes back in the day, such that I was a bit disenamoured with the whole MMO-Shooter genre, and the first Borderlands didn't set my world on fire. I could have coped with a return to TF2, but I thought you were all playing MvM which looked like Dullsville.

I've not even played a massive amount of GW2 and am left far behind, but it's been good to chat when playing it - the highlight being the Karka event, which even though we all ended up in different shards had a sort of synchronicity as our respective teams were all failing at roughly the same tasks at around the same times.

None of which are games released this year, which is a little worrying.

Super Monday Night Combat was good for a while, but like most others it didn't grip the interest for long.

I don't really have anything to add to this list, as most people seemed to have different games than me. But I really enjoyed the TF2 and mass effect 3 that we played.

EDIT: Actually, there's PAYDAY: the heist; it's not from this year but we mostly played it this year.

Thought that myself. There's been some decent new games that have come out this year that have been played by 5punk for a little while, but nothing that really grabbed my attention and nothing that hung around for more than a few weeks.

Planetside 2. It may be tricky to get used to, but what an incredible achievement and mostly a lot of fun.

Yeah, now I've played panetside 2 and actually started to get kills and not just crash/get run over/mercilessly sniped repeatedly I'm really enjoying it.
