Headsets bitches!

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Headsets bitches!

Post by HereComesPete »

I find myself at a loss to find a sennheiser or logitech or razer or whatever headset that is in the 50-100 quid ish bracket that has a boom mic that can be used on left or right ear. I like mine on the right as I smack the arm when I'm smoking or drinking because I'm a weird lefty. Their sites seem to supply nothing in terms of whether this is possible with their multitudionous product offerings except the cheapy logitech ones. If this is the case I will just have to get used to it.

I'm looking at the sennhesier pc 350's, razer Carcharias' or Megalodon's or anything else around the mark. Logitech seem somewhat lacking at this higher price? If anyone has any of these and can inform moi about boom mic adjustability or indeed if they possess a headset of a similar cost and can say whether it's shit or not I would supply mild praise for a short while instead of my usual scathing criticisms and hurtful phrases.

I have a steelseries siberia v2 and quite like it. The pull-out mic is pretty handy, and the unique headband system is very comfortable. I can't really comment on sound as I'm not much of a sound nerd, but it's good enough for me. If you can get the one that includes the little USB soundboard, it does make a difference and makes you sound sexier. (I assume, I never hear myself on teamspeak)

I have the same headset as Mr. J but without the added sexy soundcard powers.

The boom mic slides in to the left ear cup for storage when not in use, but obviously you want one on the right you can use while burping and smoking down the mic.

I've had a quick looksie and right/either side mic set ups are indeed hard to find.

Maybe have a gander at Astro A40. Bit expensive and not particularly prolific in the UK so hard to find a decent selection of reviews, but I've seen Astro referenced a lot on forums for quality hardware.

I don't own them but I've looked at the PC350/360 quite a few times. They get universal praise so I think they'd be best to go for if you can't find a right side mic set up you like.

My current method is these* around my neck, as a mic, and proper headphones (either big sennys, or shure in ears), because I suffer from terribly sweaty ears and most headsets just annoy me.

*actually some genius ones, but my point stands.

I made a comment in another thread about the Steelseries, but MJ and Grimmie beat me to it.

I just bought the Plantronics Gamecom 780 headset and so far I like it. The fake 7.1 works AMAZINGLY well with my Blu-Ray rips. In games it's more hit and miss but it generally works OK there too. With the fake 7.1 off, the sound quality is pretty great, easily on par with my old SteelSeries Siberia Neckbands, and I'd say up to snuff for the price range. Downsides: the cord is a bit short; I have to use the front USB ports on my computer so that it can reach my head. Also, a couple times the audio channels have gotten reversed somehow. I have to just unplug and replug the headset to fix it. Can be quite annoying when playing a game, but it's pretty rare, so I'm not too concerned with that. Overall, I'd say it's at least worth considering. For around $80 it's pretty good.

Hmmm, they are currently 44% off on amazon and look quite nice with their somewhat retro stylings. Added to the further consideration pile.

Oh, they are rather nice. I saw something similar in PCG a few months back, styled to look like a Vietnam era heli pilot's headset. I can't remember what they were called though, and I think they were expensive.

Bloody hell, the Siberias are hard to find in black. Out of stock in OCUK and only available from dodgy third parties on Amazon and Play. Anyone any suggestions (for Mrs Pants, as she's buying them for me)?

It's not much of a help, but I got mine from here. They're from Holland and probably more expensive than anywhere in the UK so yeah.
Did you try the official store? I think they have a UK one.

Thread Necromancer time!

Just bought me a shiny new one of these on Amazon - Plantronics Gamecom 780 on offer for £42 squids. For my Let's play series I'm using the Gamecom 380 and it's a really good headset with a decent mic and nice sound quality but I'm currently "borrowing" it from work and need to drag it back and forth all the time. If anyone's looking for a new headset, the 780 might be spot on. Very comfortable too and 7.1 surround for soundy goodness.

It's just a shame the cables are super weak, my mic gave out earlier this year and I assume the cable for the headphones is on it's way out as well. Shame, because the actual headphones are pretty good.

Very nice, may have to go for these when mine gives up on me. The mic has already gone once, luckily I had a spare replacement but I can't see it lasting out...

Did you have any trouble getting it to work with Win 7? I got nowhere last night. Dragged it into work today on Win 8 (it's not officially supported yet) and after a tiny tweak it works fine. Odd.

I did not try it on Windows 7, as I was already on 8 when I got it, but I had no trouble at all. The only thing I had to do with the latest software update was run it in Windows 7 compatibility mode to defeat the version check in the installer. It works perfectly fine.

Speaking of, make sure you are running the latest driver because the one that ships with it has this weird bug where occasionally the audio channels can reverse. No idea why it happens, but as you can imagine it makes positional audio pretty useless and the only way to fix that is to unplug and then re-plug in the headset. It's easier just to get the latest driver.

Edit: I just remembered there's no easy way to get to the driver page by just going to Plantronic's website (literally, I can't find a link to it anywhere). You basically have to google it to find it.

Sooo... My steelseries siberia has left this mortal coil and I need a replacement. As mentioned earlier I really liked the sound and comfort of the thing but in the end it was a bit fiddly, there was something wrong with the cables and the mic stopped working for me every now and then, very annoying.
I'm intend on getting the plantronics one mentioned above, are there any more additional things you can mention Deject or Tandino? Is it still working properly and are there signs of wear and tear? How about comfort? In short, would you still recommend it? Because for that price I can't really not buy it.

My 780's are still going strong. I don't have any complaints about them still. I can wear them for hours and not be too fatigued. It's only if I wear them for 6 hours straight do I start to feel it. The sound quality still seems pretty great, better than my SteelSeries Siberia Neckbands (which still work but I just couldn't deal with the way they don't fit my head). If you don't mind the price they're pretty great.
