Best Gaming Moments

Post by Dog Pants »

Every once in a while something happens in a game that leaves you speechless, gaping at the screen in awe of what just happened. It's rare - you can go for years without a moment like this - but most of us have one. It's the sort of moment you run off to tell someone about, even if they don't know or care about games. What moments have you had like this? Here's one of mine.

I'd been playing Eve for about six months, and in that time 5punkorp had gone from a couple of miners running the corpse of a once thriving corporation to a fledgeling component of the industrially motivates Interstellar Starbase Syndicate. Our numbers had swelled and we'd made the move from the safety of Empire space to the badlands of 0.0. It had taken hard work, it was dangerous and scary. I spent most of my time hanging around the safety of our little space station - really little more than a tower in space with gun turrets and an array of cargo containers floating in the shape of a cock. I had a small collection of ships which I'd worked long and hard for; my Cyclone battlecruiser, well enough armed to take on the NPC battleships who lurked in the nearby asteroid belts, my Jaguar interceptor, my pride and joy which despite its tiny size was almost as powerful as the battlecruiser, and my Stabber cruiser. Now the Stabber was something of a white elephant. My frigates I called brawlers and for good reason - I fought at close range with kinetics, getting inside the enemy's range with huge microwarp engines and hammering them while they desperately tried to track me. It wasn't the most effective tactic, but it felt good. The Cyclone was more of a ranged bruiser, using missiles to batter the enemy while keeping its shield charged by leeching the enemy's power into my own capacitor banks. The Stabber, though, had no niche. I never really worked out how to fight with one. The problem was stuck in 0.0 space out on the frontier I needed ammo to feed my explosive fighting style, and taking my fighting ships out into the badlands could only end in tears. So I sacrificed the cruiser, stripped it of most of its weapons and armour, and equipped it with powerful engines and stabilisers which would stop enemy ships from blocking my escape by jamming me. It still felt like a white elephant, crammed with odds and ends, but at least it had a purpose and I didn't really matter if it was destroyed. As it happened though, I'd accidentally created the most successful ship I ever owned.

Ammo was running short again, and since it was early on a saturday morning I decided to make a dash back to civilisation to fill my hold with ammo for my fighting ships. It should be quiet, and I should be able to get enough missiles and shells to last me for the coming week. It was a bit frowned upon travelling alone - Friz always asked that we have a scout jumping ahead to spot enemy gate camps, but I didn't have a scout. All was quiet as usual, but I kept my eyes peeled. The first sign of someone appearing in the local chat channel and my heart would race as I hurridly jumped from gate to gate, ready to flee as quickly as possible if I met the other person, not even waiting to see if they were hostile or not. It was a well practiced routine, and I was good enough at it to avoid the odd lone hunter on a number of occasions. You never knew though. Jumping to the next system I find two people already there. Maybe they were just mining or 'ratting'. Maybe they were just passing through. Or maybe they were camping the gate I was coming out of, waiting to jam and destroy any lone traveller unfortunate enough to meet them. Needless to say, it was the latter.

In a well rehearsed drill I aligned to the next gate and hit the jump button. The actions were as well rehearsed as a pro Starcraft player, and I'd made the clicks in only a second or two. It wasn't fast enough though, nothing happened. I'd been jammed by the pair, a cruiser and a frigate, and with few weapons I tried to make a fighting retreat. Making an aggressive close range pass at the frigate I tried to scare him off, before dashing away to try to get out of jammer range as fast as I could. My turrets blazed backwards as I fled, and I found myself making some headway, much to my surprise. It wouldn't last though, I was outnumbered and outgunned. My shields had gone, my armour buckling. I desperately tried to jump again, certain that nothing would happen. The space around me blurred into a lightning flecked tunnel and the ship shook as I hurtled away. The frigate must have turned off its jammers to make the killing blow, assuming that I wouldn't think to try to run again. With fires burning on my ship, almost crippled, I emerged at the gate to the next system and jumped clear. My heart was pounding, my mouth was dry, and I was elated. I made it to civilisation, and while I ran a few more blockades in that ship (which incidentally probably still sits in a station somewhere), but none were so close or so thrilling.

I'm guessing you mean non-scripted moments of your own making, because we kind of did scripted ones already. I can't think of much in either category since those posts, which perhaps says something about recent gaming.

You've just brought back memories of when I ran back our POS solo through a huge blockade. I shall now waste the morning trying to find the original post :)

Whilst we don't necessarily want this to turn into an Eve memories thread...

... I'll post an Eve memory...

One of the best memories is when ISS were involved in the second ever Mothership kill, only hours after the first ever Mothership kill. We were in the middle of the war defending ISS space in Tenerifis, and we'd been harassed by this Mothership for days, and we had ships in place ready to trap it whenever it made an appearance. We'd spent the evening fighting running fleet battles before gaining some ground and sitting our little fleet on the entry gate to our system. Unfortunately my memory on the precise run up is a bit hazy, we were attacked and I promptly lost my pride and joy battleship, I got given a Rifter frigate by an alliance mate, and arrived back into the battle in time to see the Mothership arrive.

These thing are HUGE, especially when you're in a frigate, the trap was sprung and the Mothership was caught, warp inhibited and an awful lot of Dreadnaughts courtesy of our allies jumped on top of it. A frigate isn't *much* use when fighting a supercapital ship, standard warp disruptors don't work and unsurprisingly the weapons barely scratch the paint, so I spent the battle dogfighting with 2 enemy frigates, whilst weaving in between friendly dreadnaughts and a very not-friendly mothership. In the midst of what should have been an utter lag fest, everything ran smoothly and it was one of those sci-fi film moments with the massive capital ships rushing past as I desperately tried to a). not die and b). shoot things in the face. I also did my bit by ramming myself into the mothership every so often, for the lulz.

We killed the mothership, I killed the two frigates (barely) and I instantly docked, renamed the Rifter to Mother Killer and swapped ships. I still have that frigate docked in empire somewhere, when we evacuated ISS space as a corp, I remember shouting at people to look after my frigate :)

Nothing quite gets the heart pumping like those first few steps towards pvp in Eve. I still remember the first fleet of 70 we deployed in the IAC war, thinking how awesome we were in Tech 1 fitted cruisers. But deploying our first POS has to be the crowning achievment I remember most (and then promptly taking it down again, leaving it in space over Christmas and getting it stolen). However, in the interests of making this thread not completely Eve related, here's memorable moment of mine from a different game altogether...oh sod it I can't think of any that are nearly as thrilling by comparison. There's loads of good ones - landing in Flight Sim 4 for the first time, the first nuke I unleashed on an unsuspecting foe in Civ 2, coordinating a joint air and artillery attack whilst under heavy contact in ArmA2 (that was last week actually, epic mission).

I suppose the times in WoW when a gaggle of 5punkers and 5punk-friends, most pissed, at 2am on a Saturday would clear most of (if not all) of a raid when we expected to fail miserably. This was usually caused by a daily/weekly quest of some sort forcing us to charge face first at something. They were always pretty jaw dropping, definately always hilarious though.

Hmm. One of mine hails back to my first days of EvE with Rabs, when we were dirty little ore thieves back before the can-flipping rules came in.

I remember the excitement I had when I realised "Holy shit, We're stealing from someone and they can't do anything about it!", and then being newbies managing to swipe a full can of ore worth a few million ISK each and thinking "I'm rich!".

I also remember the first time I saw Corcord warp in to Concordoken somebody after they used a smartbomb on me accidentally. Shame that person was Rabs

Just to make a change, I'm not going to mention eve in this post.

... Bugger.

Anyway, my best, most epic moment happened a good while back in ArmA2, it was about 5am, I'd just woken up and I was bored, so I decided to check on the server and fuck about all ninjay (with a very, very large gun)

Get online, realise it's just coming up for dawn, and of course, our base is infested with enemies, so I clear them out.

Once all the general admin is done, I start checking up for stuff to do, Notice a side mission a little way north that looks doable solo, if slightly kamikaze, little job involving an enemy general visiting troops, happily they're in a shallow valley, there's lots of nice lines of fire, and would be able get out of sight quickly.

I decide to forgo too much excess gear in hope of surviving and making a very quick getaway, just grab a pistol with a few mags, a radio, an M107, a standard mag and a mag of raufoss and a satchel charge, because they're always useful. I also grab a motorbike, so I don't have to walk.

Of course, this is where it all starts to go wrong...

I head out to the general area I need to be in, park the bike up and sneak over the ridge into the valley to have a look around, see if I can identify my target, needless to say, there's 2 enemy squads fucking about in the woods between me and where the target is, that and a bit of armour, certainly more than I can deal with. Figure I'll head back to base, tool up properly and come back to decimate the place with a full squad of my own.

Nope. Bike's gone. Shit.

So, somewhere rapidly approaching plan C, I have a look at the map, find a firing position that doesn't have a lot of angry foreigns between me and the dude I need to kill, however it does have a BMP2 hooning around there.

Wander around the outside of the ridge to my new position with no drama, sit in a nice spot, watching the BMP2 not moving at all, but still buttoned up, figure my best hope is to call in artillery on them, dispatch the general as the first salvo lands and then feck off.

Everything looks good, I'm safe, open my map, try to work out the range (why didn't I bring a range finder) also lick a finger and stick it skywards for windage. All good, 2 dots of drop and aim off yay much for wind, Finally shit's going right.

Call in some artillery on the still static BMP's location, which of course fucks off to where the arty isn't going to land.

Knowing the incoming artillery will probably cover anyone coming after me, I decide to take the shot. Second thing to go right, dead general.

Of course, the sound of a 50 cal in a valley along with a general becoming a holey general. All fucking hell breaks loose, I take a few more potshots until stuff starts to look at me, then I run like a massive fucking girl.

So now I'm stuck in the arse end of nowhere, with a 30lb cannon and a peashooter. Oh yeah, and a lot of dudes bearing down on me, with armour, Drop the M107. RUN. LOTS.

After about 25 minutes running, I find myself in an open field with a bush in it, a shifty looking bush, with a smoothbore gun. Shit.

Happily they're turned out and clearly paying no fucking attention, now if I just get a nice position I can probably take the commander and gunner out... at least I could if I'd not dropped the gun. Cuntymints. Plus side, I have a satchel charge.

Only one thing to do, I sneak up on the tank, drop the satchel by the side and run to a safe distance, giggling like a lunatic. Set satchel off, damages the tank to the point the crew think it's best to get out. I greet them with lots and lots of 9mm and running, 3rd thing to go right, shit's looking up.

I now have a have an AK74, a few grenades, and a mildly gimped tank, which I happily borrow and drive back to base, repair, grab a crew and go on a rampage, clearing 4 or 5 other side missions and enjoy tearing around the countryside in liberated military hardware.

Berks tale reminds me of the night Wiggy, Berk, P-nut, Frizz and myself were playing ARMA2.

We had just successfully freed a town from the hands of the "Not-Russians" and were feeling mighty pleased with ourselves when we came up with the plan to get a vehicle, load the boot with shed loads of ammo and head of to the next mission.

A Skoda type vehicle hoved into view and we bravely liberated it from the heavily unarmed civillian occupants, this involved quite a bit of shooting, mostly in the faces of the obviously evil driver and his family.

Tearing along the road at a rapid rate of knots we were all happily chatting away when suddenly the screen started flashing red and massive damage was being inflicted on my person.

It turned out that our newly liberated 5punkMobile decided to bugger off, leaving us occupants, still travelling at speed, scraping along the road.

I still can't help chuckling, my sides hurt so much from laughing when we figured out what had happened..

I suppose you had to be there, but it was funny.

Yeah, by your descriptions, I quite fancy having a crack at Arma2.

Edit: What do I need to buy? I want the SP as well for practice, so is it just ARMA2 or do I need Arrowhead as well?

Woah, hold on right there! Don't buy anything just yet - you can get ArmA2 basic completely free as of last week: http://www.arma2.com/free

I'll update the ArmA2 thread in the Shooters forum with more info to avoid shitting this thread up.

1) faaabulous Pride in CoH

2) Spartacus swarm in CoH

3) Use the tears!, in WoW

4) Early, early 5punk EvE where we got low level characters and flew them in to low sec space, all the while filling local chat with -faux-lesbian filth

Also just seen this on Cracked (bloody site, I can never just read one article):

The Second Shite one is awesome. The rest just go to prove what we all suspect about the internet and why we huddle here at 5punk like survivors in a zombie apocalypse.
