So, fatherjack brought it to my attention that the tracker ive been running fell over a while back.
Does anyone care? Is it worth fixing up again?

Well I was (kinda obviously) one of the people who missed it, but there's not a lot of point with just me on there. While it's unlikely to get a massive amount of use, it's a handy thing to have around for possible future use and I'll leave it to Prof as to whether he thinks it's worth running still.

I didn't really use it much, but I've not been doing much torrenting recently anyway. I can see why it would be useful, but torrents aren't really in short supply on teh intarwebs.

Those where my thoughts.

We could use a facility to advertise the stuff we have to other 5punkers but use an existing torrent system to share it. That way we could potentially use non-5punkers as seeds as well.

Where? Wear? Were?

Sorry - just bored at work. :)

Using an establised system where there are already a few seeds generally makes things quicker, but it we find a decent torrent for something then its worth sharing - something I've done quite a few times in the past.

Torrentpond is a good way of finding torrents I reckon. Works well for me.

As mentioned before, I don't think BitTorrent suits us for what we want to do at 5punk.

DC++ makes far more sense and is far less hassle as we basically just jump on a public hub, share whatever we want, and do direct downloads from each other.

The main thing in getting this to work is finding a good public hub that isn't too crowded, or even better would be if someone here was capable of making their own DC hub, as that would be awesome as we could password protect the whole thing so that nobody can see what we are doing.

I'd love to set a hub up here at home, but I just don't have the facilities/time to do it.

i agree, torrents dont really work for what we want. As its a closed comunity, we may as well even run everything off a server. Why bother with P2P at all?

I will dismantle the tracker thing. Sorry FatherJack, you will have to get TY's banana porn somewhere else and everyone else will have to get anime of the interwebs instead.

I'm going to have another look at DC++.

Also I came across this a few weeks ago: http://www.tubesnow.com/ (no, it's not a joke)
Probably not of much use to us and it's as buggy as a dark passage in an Indiana Jones movie, but thought I'd point it out.
