MMONG: WTF?
I hit one of those moments in life. Y'know, the ones that can change the whole of your life, for better or for worse. Deciding between games.
See I wanna get an MMONG, but i'm not sure which to go for. I'm looking for more of one with uber-character customization, but no/little crafting etc. I was deciding between...
World Of Warcraft
Star Wars: Galaxies
City Of Heroes
Anyone played them? Show me the money.

Not wanting to spoil this new "fluffeh tiem" thing, but...
Sledra is speaking forth from an orifice more usually associated with toilets and poo.
The character creation in City of Heros is good, and you would spend quite some time on that. But then you get into the game.
"heres your quest, generic hero! go beat up some generic bad guys using your generic powers! again and again!"
Sorry, but its a repetitive, unpolished, one-trick dissapointment. I like it not.
Galaxies is also a bit of an abortion. Basically EQ with a thin veneer of the Star Wars universe. And I mean thin. At no point did i get the urge to sing star wars tunes, like i did in....oh, pretty much every other star wars game i have ever played.
WoW on the other hand, is brill. Playing the Beta almost caused the downfall of my business. The locations are lovingly crafted, giving you a real sense of distinction between the different areas in the world (and, indeed, between the different areas of the different areas. If that makes any sense), the leveling of the characters feels like a fun exploration of possibilities, rather than the endless grind that you get with a lot of MMO's. The graphics are lovely. Theres an actual storyline that both makes sense and is interesting. The locations (which are lovingly crafted
) are actually quite interesting too. Teldrassil, with the city of Darnassus in its branches, as bloody huge, and well worth a visit just to look at it and go "coo!"
Anyway, stop pissing around and get WoW. It am teh bestest.

And what? the locations in CoH are not lovely crafted? Theres so much more to do than just beat up random crap, there a lot of badges to find and collect, special team tasks that you can do to socialise. Theres one hell of a storyline, and with the next release, they will have doubled the content of the original game.
And WoW has a less complex character creation system so your character is more generic than in CoH, and has the same go kill generic villan etc thing.
So, in conclusion, Joose was speaking out of said orifice. I however, was speaking the truth.

ah-hahhahahahhhahaaha
A brilliantly constructed argument there, but if you would allow me to dissassemble it somewhat:
No, the locations in CoH are not lovingly crafted. Its miles and miles of near identical city blocks. Overflowing with randomly placed thugs, just kind of hanging around on street corners.
All this makes me wonder...have you actually played WoW at all, or is this purely conjecture?

Such as? badges? what is this, girl guides? As for the special task horses...in what MMO can you not do this?More to do than beat up random crap
Erm, did i write the bit where i said that the character generator in CoH was really good too small, or something? Saying that though, allthough you can make really good looking heros, they basically boil down to the same general classes (tank, brawler, blaster or...er..controller, i think). They look good, but there is essentially 4 different classes. WoW has 9 classes, plus 8 different races, making a total of 72 noticably different types of character to play. And thats not including proffessions. And WoW has a less complex character creation system so your character is more generic than in CoH...
Um, no, actually thats not true. Some of the missions are along the lines of "kill 3 wolves", but a lot are things like "recover the lost spangly pants of doom from the crevice of death" or "we need to find out what happened to Bob the Demon, go speak to his mate Dave (at which point you find out Dave has been turned into a pig and you need to find certain artifacts to turn him back)" Quests in WoW tend to be individually written stories.and has the same go kill generic villan etc thing.
All this makes me wonder...have you actually played WoW at all, or is this purely conjecture?
All good arguements, however
And my info from WoW comes from several different review sites/magazines, meaning that although i dont get the experience of playing it or anything, i get a wide range of unbiased opinions which allow me to asses the game in its full, without having to get up to whatever level or whatever you get to experience all the extras
6 acctually, then go on to choose your primary powers, each avalible from 6 different pools depending on class, that is, 6 pools for each one. Then we move onto the secondary powers, which is the same again. Each class therefore has 36 different combinations, which, when multiplied by 6 makes 216 different combinations, which i see is quite alot.but there is essentially 4 different classes
Granted the badges thing seems a bit naff, and that you can do task horse missions within most MMORPGs, with each badge you get a special title that you can choose to display below your username. Each and every badge has a different title, so with around 100 badges that means that you will be able to find any such title you choose.badges? what is this, girl guides? As for the special task horses...in what MMO can you not do this?
Whenever you goto a contact within CoH you start a story arc. You can have two of these going at any one time. Each of these arcs has normally 4 missions in it, with these four missions then telling an epic, and within each mission you may be able to find a clue to discover more in that particular storyline. Within the two areas of CoH that i have played within at the moment, i have had 6 arcs go, each interesting and engrossing, and im only level 14."recover the lost spangly pants of doom from the crevice of death" or "we need to find out what happened to Bob the Demon, go speak to his mate Dave (at which point you find out Dave has been turned into a pig and you need to find certain artifacts to turn him back)"

hm, i think you may have misunderstood. I wassnt talking about skill trees here, Im talking about character classes. So what if your blaster throws fireballs, shards of ice, or lightening bolts? hes still a blaster. Oh, and I think you'll find theres 5, according to the official website.Sledra wrote: 6 acctually, then go on to choose your primary powers, each avalible from 6 different pools depending on class, that is, 6 pools for each one. Still, if you insist that we should go down to details such as secondary powers, then we really should take into account the proffesions in WoW. Theres 12. You can have two proffessions at any one time. So, playing the numbers game, 72*12(for the first proffession)*11(for the second proffesion, as you cant have the same proffession twice)=10368 different possible combinations. That, my friend, is a lot.
yes, yes it does...Granted the badges thing seems a bit naff...
which as you just pointed out, is a little naff.with each badge you get a special title that you can choose to display below your username. Each and every badge has a different title, so with around 100 badges that means that you will be able to find any such title you choose.
ok, i might have been a little disingenuous there. I didnt really mean there was no story at all in city of heros. I meant more that the stories were unoriginal shite. Seriously, they seem to have written their stories by simply grabbing them at random out of comics. Old comics.Whenever you goto a contact within CoH you start a story arc. Id love to know which reviews youve been reading then, cos pretty much all the reviews ive read have said its one of, if not the best MMO available. MMONG.com, for example, gave it a score of 8.7 (thier highest at the moment) against CoH's 7.6. PCGamer gave it 94%, as opposed to CoH's 85%. IGN gave it 9.1, and gave CoH 8.4. Gamespot gave it 9.5, and CoH 8.4. So where exactly were you getting this negative info from? As far as i cant tell, everyone who reviewed it agrees with me that CoH is good, but WoW is much better. And my info from WoW comes from several different review sites/magazines, meaning that although i dont get the experience of playing it or anything, i get a wide range of unbiased opinions which allow me to asses the game in its full, without having to get up to whatever level or whatever you get to experience all the extras

I see this devolving into an ever increasing battle of quotes and misquotes, and your misspellings, so i shall conceed defeat. However, when i said i got my WoW reviews out of magazines etc, i wasnt comparing them against CoH, just reading the reviews. I very rarely take the /10 rating in, because many times before i have read a crap review of a game, only to find it is infact the dogs bollocks.
Also, about there being 5, the website is out of date.
There are: Blasters, Scrappers, Tankers, Controllers, and then two types of alien human hybrid, one dark, one good, like elves whose names i can't remember

yup, i can live with that.
Dont get me wrong, i dont think CoH is shite, and with the City of Villains thing coming out, it looks to be getting better. But personally, given the choice between the two, i think WoW is the better game. Its a pain in the rear that neither do trial versions, as then he could just play em all and seewhich he prefered, as like you say, ultimately a lot of it comes down to personal preference.
Galaxies does a trial version, If anyone doesnt believe us when we say its poo.
Of course, I think he should sign up for EVE, but that wasnt an option :D

CoH is one of the few (that i know of) MMORPGs that you can play occasionally and not get addicted. Sure, sometimes it is fun to go on for 3-4 hours and level with your Supergroup mates, but at the same time, you can go on for 10mins and not feel your soul leaking into the screen so that the developers can harvest it for money.
