Setting up Multi-Theft Auto

Post by Dog Pants »

I've had a bit of a mare setting up MTA, so I thought I'd impart my knowledge on those who might also be struggling (possibly suggested by Berk after I was hassling him for help).

1. Download MTA version 0.5 for GTAIII and VC
2. Install Vice City
3. Run a game of Vice City. Actually enter the game, and save one for good measure.
4. Install MTA. DO NOT LET IT RUN AFTER IT HAS INSTALLED.
5. Run your saved game of VC. You only need to run it once in reality, but I'm not 100% sure if it's supposed to be before or after the MTA install, so it's safer this way.
6. Run MTA.
7. If MTA gives you an error create a file in your MTA directory called mtaclientwelcome.dat, and edit the second line of your mta.ini with the line DontGetLatest=1.
8. If it still doesn't work, uninstall MTA and install VC patch 1.1, then try again from step 3.
9. Find 5punk.co.uk MTA:VC and double click on it.
10. Set the version to 1.0 or 1.1 as applicable.
11. Click Start game and find your VC exe.
12. If the game crashes after the intro try logging out of xfire, as this can cause problems.
13. If you get a load of gibberish when you start the game and nothing else happens, exit out and enable 'Update Welcome Message on Startup'.
14. Select your team with A and D, return starts play.

It took me about four fixes to finally get this working, so if you have any other problems check here for answers:
