Suggestion

Post by Imperatore »

Edit: It's free, just not sure on technical side.

Sorry if this is totally unrealistic but I don't know the details. 'Most' people these days have some sort of smartphone. I for one browse this forum on mine quite a lot.
There is an app on iPhone/Android called Tapatalk that makes browsing forums a LOT quicker, perhaps some have used it?
Just wondering if it's possible to make this forum compatable. I have not looked into the work/cost required but if it's free and not much effort could we possibly look into it? If there was a small cost I'd be more than willing to contribute. Obviously if it's only me interested in it then it's not worth it but maybe others would be.
Here is a screenshot of it in action from my iPhone:

We do already have a mobile theme, though it's quite old and not especially touch-friendly. You can switch to it with the 'PDA Style' link at the bottom of the page.
Tapatalk isn't compatible with our current forum software. I can't see what it does that shouldn't be easy enough to do in a properly mobile-optimised site theme though, which will be forthcoming some time before the sun explodes.

This is relevant to my interests as I will soon be acquiring an HTC Hero, and I would rather like to browse 5punk at work.

It's different to a mobile site because it is set to only show new posts etc and you can fiddle a few things on there. Obviously you don't need to access through your browser, the app does it all for you.
That said maybe a mobile site is the same, I would have thought this be less work

Bugger that, get the desire or the new wildfire. They've got better screens and work faster. There's rumours of a desire HD too, which would be the HD 2 like mine with the high resolution screen coupled with android and the new app system they have.

One of my mates has the Desire and swears by it. I want one too, but upgrade isn't due for another 9 months or something.

:above: Pete is right. I have a Hero and love it, don't get me wrong, but it's pretty much the first Android phone in the UK - they're much quicker and better now.

If you're set on getting a hero though, be sure to put Android 2.1 on it. It makes it quicker, shinier and more user friendly. Huzzah!

Only getting it as it's a free upgrade - bound to be quicker than the lump of shit that currently masquerades as my phone.

I love the having to use itunes for connect software. I also love the can only do one thing at a time. Furthermore I love the overpriced tariffs, the higher chance of being mugged by some pikey, the slower internet, the random signal fluctuations and the fact that so may loud mouthed tossers love to sit and bray meaninglessly into their ostentatiously displayed gadget. :P

Although to be fair I'd say the iphone 4, despite its problems is a great phone. Second only to the desire in terms of outstanding features.

In my defence good Sir, I wanted an Android phone because I like new things and already had an iPhone 3G. I just wasn't keen on any of the current handsets. If the Droid X was out I would have got that. I said to a number of people this will likely be my last iPhone because there are a lot more phone coming out with Android that look increasingly tasty.

I'd like to upgrade to an iPhone 4 but I'm waiting for a company staff discount tariff. I have to run older firmware on my old 3G to make it run at a tolerable speed.

However Android based phones are becoming more and more attractive and I'd love to test one out. But I'll stick with what I know works and is a no fuss option, for now.

Much as I hate to be the iPhone spokesman, preferring normally to just use the thing, enjoy it and not give a shit about other peoples opinions, I feel compelled to ask some questions here. Note that im not arguing that everyone should have an iPhone; if you dont like it, fair enough. Its just that the arguments put forward here ive heard over and over, and they seem a lot like slightly wobbly attempts to legitimise the fact that people dont want it purely because its an apple product.

Never seen the problem with this. Its closed when Im not actively using it, it syncs my address book and suchlike with outlook no problem, I add and remove music and video just by dragging stuff on and off so that's nice and easy, and installing/uninstalling software to it is about as easy as it could possibly be. So what's the issue?
I also love the can only do one thing at a time.
er, what? You realise the 3GS and the 4 both have multitasking now, right?
Furthermore I love the overpriced tariffs
Yeah, the £30 a month im paying is way more than the £30 a month I was paying on my old phone. No, wait...
the higher chance of being mugged by some pikey
Is there *any* actual evidence of this, because it smells of urban myth to me. Do you really think Mr Mugger is going to say "Oh, wait, that's not a really expensive iPhone 4, its just a really expensive HTC Desire. Off you trot then"?
the slower internet
Again, love to know what you are basing that off. From a brief google, all the speed comparisons I could find put the iPhone as one of the faster phones for internets. Not the fastest necessarily, but not slow.
the random signal fluctuations
I'll give you that one. That's why im not looking to upgrade my 3GS any time soon.
and the fact that so may loud mouthed tossers love to sit and bray meaninglessly into their ostentatiously displayed gadget. :P
Quick solution: Don't be a loud mouthed tosser ostentatiously displaying your gadget. Then people wont associate you with ostentatious loud mouth tossers

As the resident iTunes hater I have to deny you that one. iTunes will install iTunesHelper, QTTask, iPodService, Apple Mobile Device and Bonjour, all of which run at system startup.

My first action on startup is to shut down Itunes completely.

Not quite correct. I've just started up, and QTTask and Bonjour are nowhere to be found. The other three are, but as they are taking up just over 6 MB of memory in total, I doubt its making a noticeable difference to my system. I bet you don't shut Steam down when you are not using it (just under 14 MB at startup), and Dropbox is considerably more greedy (a frankly terrifying 39 MB at startup). Hell, XFire uses more resources than those three combined. So again, it sounds a little more like an excuse to hate on the Apple product than an actual reason not to want it.

Go, Joose, Go!

Of course I agree with you, but I've given up defending Apple products from the haters. Although I don't like running iTunes on Windows.

A few people at work try to berate me for my choice of phone. I put it down to jealousy or insecurity about their own purchases.
