I think Alec is writing a preview for one of the other denizens of the game-o-sphere about this game right at this moment. I am sure he'll link to it later. But anyway, the new bit of Fallout 3, which is being developed by the lovely Obsidian for release towards the end of this year, is called New Vegas, and it's looking like it might please a few apocalypse-lovers. Bethesda sent over their latest images, and I've posted 'em up below. Click for full size!

I thought this was to be a completely different game? Instead it's Fallout 3.5.

I think the changes will be in gameplay mechanics and execution.

The wikipedia article has me looking forward to "hardcore mode", purely for the fact it adds ammo weight! Yay!

That was one of my biggest gripes of FO3 so that makes me happy. Plus Obsidian have better writers.

In short, this'll be more like the Fallout 3 I want to play. It's no Van Buren (the proper FO3 that was in development by Interplay) but it'll at least be closer to the first two games in feel.

But I liked carrying around 5000 rounds of 5mm bullets everywhere I went. :(

Indeed. It's hard to find a gripe with something that makes the game easier to play. I resented having to spend points in Strength just to be able to cart around the items I considered essential to my survival when I was a sniper/hacker, yet a melee figher where those Strength points are more usefully spent benefits little from an increased ammo-carrying capacity.

I felt it was too easy.

I think I finished the game with 5k microfusion (for laser/plasma rifles) even though I used them both pretty much all the time once I'd acquired them, 3 or 4k for energy pistols, 4/5k in EEC and 8k in 5mm.

It was far past making it easy and had gone into the silly area. If you've got no weight limit you should have a carry limit (either items or number) otherwise you just become a walking ammo dispenser.

It looks likes the hardcore mode is optional. Which is good as it sounds quite boring to me. Having to drink water or dehydrate, fascinating.

I like the idea of faction (dis)approval and the improved companion stuff. Plus being able to upgrade weapons, so you can keep a favourite for longer.

I concur that the water thing sounds crap, but there was quite a lot of water in the game anyway. Bottles, basins, toilets etc... I can't imagine it would be a major problem to stock up on bottles before going trekking anyway.

True but personally I'd rather not have to. Tougher enemies and heal-over-time sounds like a good thing, but I wouldn't want the extra stuff that goes with the hardcore mode.

I've heard people complaining about the companions from the FO3 and not bothering to use them. I think the only one I found was Fawkes and he was pretty useful. Granted he got in the way indoors and had trouble traversing external terrain, but he was useful in a fire fight and as a mule. I kept him with me as much as I could. He was virtually indestructible.

I think the issue here is whether you want to play a game or a simulator. Theres nothing intrinsically wrong with either, but if you want to play a game, you dont want to have to fanny about with ammo limits and dehydration. On the other hand, if you want to play a simulator, then anything that makes the experience more realistic is good.

I doubt its anything to worry about though, really. If its anything like FO3 or Oblivion, I give it a week before its possible to mod it beyond recognition. If its released state is too hard or not realistic enough, you are going to be able to change all of that.

I made that useless fucker Fawkes carry everything around. Lest she could do for not getting into the damn chamber.

I think the companions were an after thought to be honest.

I only ever used Fawkes. And then only because he walking around with unlimited ammo and a laser mini gun. I still mashed most people before he got involved though.

Fawkes is awesome though, he's practically invincible and he's got the gatling laser with unlimited ammo. I can't think of any one else that's as good. Star Paladin Cross is almost as good, but you need to equip her with good gear for her to be all that useful.

I resent Fawkes for not getting in the chamber, despite being immune/resistant/whatever to the radiation.

I had dogmeat and fawkes at all times, dogmeat was very prone to dying so I entered a command into the console that made him invincible. He was utterly useless in a fight and always ran off when there were enemies around, but he was my dog.

Ah Dogmeat.

He was awesome in F1 and F2. For about 3/4ths of the game until everyone else got harder. Then he died. Brutally. Mostly by exploding into little doggie chunks.

I left him at the entrance to the vault in F3. Then he vanished.

Must be a bug, normally he returns to vault 101 when he disappears, and waits for you there.

I told Dogmeat to find me some ammo and he never came back.

I imagine he's inside a super mutant's stomach by now.

You don't have Broken Steel? He does when you have that.
