I'm liking the woodland and city shots, and that some of the monsters look as detailed as the backgrounds, as all the plain concrete building and tunnel shots were reminding me of Coventry city centre.

I assume it's one of the weird gravitational anomalies that apparently sping up around the game.
I read a preview in PCG of Stalker this month, and they were quite critical of it. The even went so far as to point out that they take great pains to avoid being critical in previews, but in this case had to comment on some of their disappointments. Apparently the bits they played were nowhere near as free-form and unscripted as we've been led to believe. They also admitted though that they were playing saved games and may not have been given an accurate view of the game.
It goes some way to confirm my prediction that it will be more of a standard shooter with pretty graphics and a bit of RPG in it, rather than a freeform masterpiece of AI.

Remember the hype surrounding 'Black' before that came out? That turned out to be a major disappointment. I'm just thoroughly sceptical these days when a game is billed as the "best thing ever since sliced caek".

when did they start slicing caek? I eat mine whole.
Yes. Very pretty. However I am the most cynical person when it comes to FPS's ever. I even found HL2 dull after I got over the initial 'Oh look, nice physics' bit. Ultimately every single one of them is just another take on Doom - run run run shoot heal run run run die reload - and you are lead through the game by the level designer. Deus Ex touched on the sort of inspired level design that's needed by having distinctly different ways to complete each mission.

A large portion of this is just the fact that making the game that GSG Gameworld wanted to make is if not impossible, at least prohibitively difficult. If you read some of the dev interviews around the intarwebs they explain how they've really had to cut back the entire design. Still, as it is right now, it still looks pretty cool.
I can't wait for the beta/demo to see if it truly is as good as its potential.
Take one copy of 'Oblivion', gut and remove the Medievel aspects then place to one side.
Take one copy of F.E.A.R and remove the gore and slow motion glands.
Take one copy of Doom 3 and remove the 'ARGH HOLY FUCK' gland
Place all ingredients into a HDDVD sprinkle with beef weapons and roast under a close eye for 4 years - 3 of which spent looking for the complete opposite of EA (development and support)
Ta-Da a Mahoosive FPS RPG with fantastic AI, Free-roaming and graphics.
