Anime recommendations
Since my other recommendation post was a little short on detail, orphaned in the general forum, and since a few people have asked for ideas on what to see, I've expanded on the titles I mentioned before with brief summaries, so you get the general idea of what they're about.
If anyone has any ideas on extra detail, (or perhaps some icons) for identifying various story themes to be sought after or avoided depending on preference (mecha, blood, squeaky-voiced cuties, bouncing boobzors) let me know and I'll make, beg or borrow some and add them to each title.
Generally rather good classic ones:
Appleseed - Human and cyborg cop partners battle to save post WW3 utopia from terrorists.
Patlabor - Labors are human-piloted big stompy robots - or mechs as we know them in games, the latest weapon available to the police trying to fight crime amidst a plot that could destroy NeoTokyo.
Wings of Honneamise - In an altenate world similar to our own, a country is taking it's first wobbly steps into spaceflight. At first ridiculed, our hero astronaut-to-be recovers his drive in an unlikely place. Slow moving and thoughful, but wonderful to look at.
CyberCity/AD Police/GenoCyber trilogy - This has been dubbed the Cyberpunk collection. Futuristic cops chasing brutal murderers, robots-gone-mad and evil hackers. Definate echoes if not outright copying of Blade Runner and Robocop - but this is no bad thing.
Black Magic M66 - Video journalist investigates secret military androids sent to elimate their creator's granddaughter. Made by Appleseed creator.
Bubblegum Crisis - All-girl crimefighting team outfitted in close-fitting powered battlesuits. Crisis is the original, Crash a slightly inferior retelling of their origins, Crisis Tokyo 2040 is a remake with superb modern graphics and answers to the loose ends.
Armitage III - Mars 2179. Prominent people are shockingly found to be a new type of android - a type III, when they are murdered. On the trail is a cop and his partner, Armitage. The title gives rather a clue as to Armitage's origins, but it's excellent Blade Runner style fun and a clear inspiration for Ghost in the Shell.
Metropolis - A remake of the ancient black & white classic, with utterly superb backdrops. Think the style of Final Fantasy - neon floor signs but with steam-powered propellor-driven zepplins overhead.
Plastic Little - The original monster-catching gang. Girls with big boobs and shiny outfits zoom around in combining bikes, boats and planes collecting monsters. Not exactly heavy plot-wise, but excellently drawn.
Ones that have done the rounds on TV, etc:
Tenchi Muyo Ryo Ohki - Hapless Tenchi winds up sharing his house with a bunch of insane girls from another planet. Unforgettable characters, lots of silliness, a rabbit that changes into a spaceship and a cute girl. Starts out with space battles and demon-fighting, but gets more mixed-up in later series with the same characters being plopped into alternate universes and meeting each other all over again.
Mezzo - The Danger Service Agency take on any dangerous jobs - for lots of money. Mikura kicks ass with pink hair and a shiny tight orange outfit, but her violent solutions aren't always the best.
Fullmetal Alchemist - Two brothers attempt forbidden alchemy and attempt to bring back their dead mother, nearly destroying themselves. The elder loses an arm and leg (replaced by metal copies) and the other is just a soul bound to a suit of armour. We follow the elder's quest to become an offical State Alchemist and restore his brother.
Cowboy Bebop - Space bounty-hunters with colourful characters and a kick-ass ship. Faye Valentine's costume is one of the more interesting in anime.
Love Hina - Clumsy wannabe Tokyo U student winds up as caretaker of a girl's dorm. Inevitably makes the odd faux pas, usual thing - saying the wrong thing, falling into the bath with them, grabbing their tits. Hilarity ensues. Will he ever meet the girl he made a childhood promise to?
Great Teacher Onizuka - Hard-ass ex-gang-member and part-time pervert teacher starts out at the toughest school and the meanest class. Their first trick is to post photos of him in a compromising position with a girl student on the staff notice board. His ass-kicking ways win over some of the boys, but he will need more skills to win over the whole class.
Dominion Tank Police - Future police girl joins the Tank Police in her custom mini-tank. Most of Newport City gets trashed as she chases the sex-slave Puma Sisters. (who make an appearance in the much later Mezzo)
Ah My Goddess - Shy, awkward university student gets stuck doing the cleaning when he calls a wrong number. A beautiful godess appears in his mirror. Of course, she has equally pretty sisters who want to move in too...
Super Magic Girls:
Project A-Ko - The original Super Magic Girl, predates Sailor Moon by six years. Magical school girl A-ko (she has well-known super-parents) battles with evil C-ko and her Robotnik-like vehicles of doom for the attentions of bawly brat B-Ko.
All-Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku - Cyborg body of a babe, brain of a cat. Nuku Nuku tries to fit in at school in all the most inadvisable ways, while her home life is mostly spent defending her little brother from huge mechanical contraptions piloted by her mother. Father (who made her) is also a bit of a mad scientist, and him and the mother have a great love/hate kiss/fight relationship.
Saber Marionette J - In a male-only world, the women are androids, but a few have been given emotions, boy finds three of these, they move in. Cute, silly comedy, but ultimately they have to toughen up and battle.
Moldiver - Guy's dreams of being a superhero are put on hold, when his sister modifies his invincibility suit into a schoolgirl uniform (what else?). She now battles Machinegal and her army of girlie androids. Would have made a great kids series over here, but for the naked transformation scenes.
Gunbuster - We follow initially-clumsy Noriko's attempts to join the Earth Defense Fleet like her famous father. Although rather let down by rushed black & white scenes of the final battle, it is still a very impressive anime. The Gunbuster itself is a fucking HUGE mecha, although even the training mechs are impressive - and the ending is remarkaby poignant.
Magical Girl Pretty Sammy - This is a Tenchi spin-off, and only really worth it if you've seen that, and like it. It's a comedy that only really works once you know the characters in the original, as it's based around Sammy's (Sasami) dreams, where the other chars start out being "saved" by her, but then they start to behave as they normally do, it all kicks off and Sammy has to bust out the love stick. It's also a piss-take of Sailor Moon, but actually has a similar fan base who completely miss the irony.
Girly: (school life, romance, magic fighting dollies)
Azumanga Daioh - A disarming, simple tale of a group of school girls in their three years through middle school. Lunatic teachers, sections of super-exaggerated drawing style and the occasional overload of cuteness don't detract from the excellent characterisation. It's my favourite because it always makes me smile and I've even got the manga.
Fruits Basket - An orphan girl moves in with a family of boys who have a bit of a secret. Each changes into an animal of the zodiac (plus a cat) when touched by the opposite sex. Obviously lots of accidental collisions occur, in potentially embarrassing situations, but what made it for me was the cat (tricked out of being in the zodiac by the rat). DVD extras of Japanese vocal cast FTW.
Angelic Layer - Girl moves to big city to live with aunt. Sees magic fighting dollies advert. Buys. Enters fighting competions. Not much to actual story, but I like the little bits, like when she fucks up cutting the doll's hair. End theme is great, too.
Pretear - Girl's father marries rich lady, now everyone hates her. Seven blokes turn up (The Leafe Knights) and by "merging" with them she can control various elements and defeat baddies which keep appearing by ripping their hearts out. Would be quite mild kids TV if not for the merging and heart-ripping.
Cute Girl, Emotionless Killer:
Gunslinger Girl - Young girls traumatised by parent's deaths are brainwashed and used as assasins. Half watching the missions they go on (top gunnage, best use of a P-90, ever) half showing the background story of these broken girls.
Elfen Lied - Buckets of blood, dismemberment and decapitions. Naked telekinetic demon girl escapes military facility, ripping a bunch of soldiers to shreds, looses memory and turns up on a beach, only able to squeak "Nyuu". Is taken in by a boy and girl cousin and starts to learn how to behave, but the demon is not dead, and she's not the only one around.
Noir - Two female assasins try to uncover their history. Very stylish series, perhaps overstresses the main theme that assasins cannot become close to anyone or anything, but impressive nonetheless.
Serial Experiments Lain - Excellent artwork, but a rather confusing series. Loner girl seeks refuge in cyberspace, "experimenting" on people in often cruel ways.
Kiddy Grade - Totally dodgy name. Sort of space cops/assasins working their way up, and discovering their organisation is not what they thought. Supposedly masters of disguise (as long as it's a sexy disguise) plus interesting attacks (magic cutting hair ribbon, go) make this entertaining.
Cute Girl that is actually a powerful robot masquerading as a maid:
Hand Maid May - Guy accidentally orders 1/6 human size robot maid. Cannot pay. Cyberdyne Corp want her back.
Chobits - The future. People have Persocons - robots in human form who email and stuff. Shy univeristy student Hideki finds one in a dumpster. Can only cheep "Chii" (a common theme). Naturally she's modelled as a cute girl, and her on switch is located between her legs. Much embarrasment and tutelage ensues, Chii buys pants, Chii discovers Hideki's porn stash, etc. Turns out she's more than the average and has independent thought. It's cute and funny, though and worth a watch even if you don't dream of your own sexy robot girl.
Mahoromatic - Automatic Maiden - Mahoro is a veteran android soldier with a nearly depleted power core, but is given the option to power down and live as a normal human for a further year. She becomes a maid for a messy student, but he is (obliviously) attacked by various baddies causing her to have to power up and fight and further shorten her lifespan. Funny and sad. Hilarious closing theme, featuring the student's teacher who thinks her prodigious melons are the perfect antidote to Mahoro's oft-referenced small ones.
Amazing Nurse Nanako - She's a rather crap nurse to a mad professor type. Has massive bouncing boobs and most of the attacks against her seem to be targeted at getting them out. Well drawn, if improbable.
Boyish: (robots, fighting)
Full Metal Panic - School girl with hidden power to control special mechs is sent soldier for protection. He turns up heavily armed. In a mech. At school. She's less than impressed with him at first, but he proves his worth as they are sent to increasingly tougher engagements.
Tokyo Underground - Under Tokyo there's a secret underground world with elemental magic users. A monk's son above ground exhibits a rare power and goes underground to liberate the oppressed people. A nice series, which while a little 1-on-1 fight-heavy is a nice twist on a common theme, with very memorable characters.
Burn Up W/Excess - The DVD of this has an interesting bonus feature: a jiggle counter. The all-girl Neo-Tokyo police fight crime with boobs a-bouncing all over the place. Genuinely funny characterisation makes this watchable, though.
Green Green - All boys school. Some bright spark thought sending a busload from Big Boobs School For Girls to stay for a while was a great idea. Tied up with the decent boy trying to stop his mates perving, yet always getting caught himself, is a plot about two forbidden lovers destined to meet again. And a man-eating cactus. Rar!
Hyper Police - Cop with wild girl partner who destroys half the city in search of the bad guys.
Inu Yasha - School girl travels through portal in well and frees demon her ascendant defeated in battle.
Kino's Journey - Kino, an adventurer on a talking motorbike travels this alternate world, only spending three days in each location. Very creative and entertaining.
Ninja Scroll - Saves Ninja woman from rape, fights lots of demons.
You're Under Arrest - Girl police duo with leet driving skillz.
Fantasy: (historic, RPG-style)
Record of Lodoss War - LOTR-style swords and sorcery type stuff.
The Heroic Legend of Ar(i)slan - More epic fantasy sort of thing.
dot Hack - A fantasy game player becomes somehow trapped within the game. Many references and recognisable nods to existing MMONG game features.
King of Bandit Jing - Jing is the best bandit, he can steal anything. Very entertaining and funny.
Magic Shopping Arcade Abenobashi - A shopping arcade with a history. A girl and boy keep travelling to the arcade through different time periods, and keep failing to get back to the present - where the girl is about to move away. Each timeline has the same unique bunch of characters as the original arcade. Magical.
Comedy, Quirky:
Excel Saga - Utterly bonkers. Hyperactive Excel wants only to please her unappreciative boss, who plans to take over the world. Which world is uncertain, as they get through a few. She's not-very-well aided by her companion Hyatt (who dies, constantly). Top intro scenes as Hyatt just about manages to choke out each line before expiring. Utterly destroyed in the English dub, which is far too squeamish about Hyatt choking up blood all the time.
Furi Kuri (FLCL) - Even more confusing and hectic than Excel. Kid is trying to stave off the affections of his absent big brother's gf when some weird girl runs him over on a moped and smacks him on the head with a guitar. A huge lump appears on his head and turns into a massive horn. Then, it gets weird.
Ushio & Tora - Temple boy accidentally frees demon, but possesses spear that controls him. Demon just wants to eat him.
KO Century Beast Warriors - Nice comedy about half-beasts teaming up to find a treasure. Mermaid ass jokes.
Ranma 1/2 - Changes gender. Hot water, boy. Cold water, girl. Plenty of opportunity for comedy, as characters who are in love with one half, are jealous of, or sworn to destroy the other.
Di Gi Charat - Sugary cute. Think SD kitty ears with huge bells around the neck. Scary face man is supposed to represent us westerners - he looks like the man in the moon on old films.
Dragon Half - Best ever theme tune. Daughter of a dragon and a dragon-slayer (retired). Out to get tickets for teen-idol Dick Saucer (lol) who also happens to be..a dragon slayer.
Ground Defense horse Mao-chan - The most pathetic, useless defense horse ever. Daughters of the land, sea and air commanders have special equipment at their disposal so that they may fight the enemies that are just too cute for normal armies to fight.
Puni Puni Poemi - Sort of a spin-off from Excel Saga. Almost incomprehensible, with so many anime references per second your eyes will spin. Utterly dodgy: "Don't rape me Mr. Tentacle, I'm only six!", but knows it. Proper piss taking.
Slayers - Warring witches that typically take different sides in a town dispute. The town usually ends up being utterly destroyed.
horror, super-violent and porno ones
Ichi the Killer short - A prequel to the bloodbath live-action version. Even more slicing and dicing.
If anyone has any ideas on extra detail, (or perhaps some icons) for identifying various story themes to be sought after or avoided depending on preference (mecha, blood, squeaky-voiced cuties, bouncing boobzors) let me know and I'll make, beg or borrow some and add them to each title.

"Cute Girl that is actually a powerful robot masquerading as a maid", there's 4 or more series that fit into this category?

It's mainly compiled from my list in the other thread, which was mostly stuff other people hadn't already mentioned.M4niachicken wrote:no evangelion? i are
Also a few things like Evangelion, Gundam and Nadesico were all over the TV before I really began to watch seriously, so I've only really seen whatever episodes were on at the time, in whatever order I caught them, rather than watch the whole series properly.
The thread's not locked so anyone can feel free to add their own recommendations and summaries of stuff they've been impressed with.

"For the uninitiated, manga is primarily about bonkers sci-fi, with machines that invariably turn into giant penises."spoodie wrote:Empire magazines top 10 anime: http://www.empireonline.com/promotions/magicalstarsign/
Invariably.

For info:
Anime is a "loan word" the Japanese use to describe what we might call cartoons, or animations, and is pronounced like the start of the word animation. We mainly use it to describe animated titles originating from, or influenced by the East.
Manga is used to describe what we call comic books, although it is also the name of the company that first began distributing anime in the West, hence it is often confused with the word "anime".
This is probably old news (I know fuck all about anime) but I recently found The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya to be well worth watching. I was most surprised.
Comedy mainly, but it seems to have aspects of most of those categories*. That may be a result of the main character actively seeking out clichés to make interesting things happen to her apparently dull life.
*although the cute girl in a maid's outfit isn't the powerful robot.
edit: Translations of the books are here: www.baka-tsuki.net. If the anime series continues on the same course, things will get very braw.

edit: Translations of the books are here: www.baka-tsuki.net. If the anime series continues on the same course, things will get very braw.
I may as well add this, as it's not in the list but rather good. No idea what category it fits in though.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - or "When Cicadas Cry". Five friends get paranoid and kill each other. Over and over again. In a variety of intriguing ways! The story arcs tend to start off quite light-hearted then descend in to a gruesome spiral of lies and death, possibly with some extra death.
The second series has just started.

The second series has just started.

RaXephon - Loosely based on EVA with a twist about reality and music.. almost as hard to follow
Blue Seed - Team of humans with not so human allies fight monsters brought to life by the Earth.. or some such along those lines.. Good series, especially with the comedic shorts at the end of some episodes.
Bakaretsu Hunters (sp?) - Team of magically endowed people with alternate lives, led by a council of angels fights monsters. BIG bouncing boobs. (seems to be a theme here doesn't it?)
No Macross series mentioned?
Only the premier Mecha style anime that ever ocurred. Sure Gundam has a larger following now, but Macross started it all. Even had a dice n' paper RPG fasioned after it.
Golden Boy for toilet humour and bouncing boobs.
Cat Girl Nuku Nuku - Much the same as the aforementioned; except the girl is in a cat costume. Big suprise.

Other stuff that I haven't seen mentioned yet:
Hellsing - excellent 13-episode show with the usual vampire-turns-vampire hunter theme. This is one of my all-time favourites. Another vampire-hunts-vampire show worth checking out is Blood+ (and the OVA/pilot for it, Blood: The Last Vampire, is even better IMO). For old-school animé vampire hunting, of course, there's Vampire Hunter D.
Witch Hunter Robin - about a witch who's part of a group hunting down evil magic-users. High-budget, and a pretty good show.
Big O - giant robots fighting, with the twist that it's set in a post-apocalyptic world where the apocalypse in question was actually mass amnesia.
Cyber City Oedo 808 - a cyberpunk-themed show with criminals turned policemen in exchange for a reduction in their sentences. There are only three episodes unfortunately, and it's relatively hard to find (I caught it on my cable TV VOD service), but it's well worth a watch. If anyone has this on DVD and feels like dropping a copy on to the floor, I would be very grateful.
Samurai Champloo - by the people who did Cowboy Bebop, but it's set in 17th or 18th century Japan instead of the future, and the music is hip-hop rather than jazz ("champloo" is the Anglicized form of "champuru", which means "to remix" in Japanese I believe). It's about a girl who's looking for a samurai who smells of sunflowers. Should be pretty easy to find on the floor or elsewhere.
Inuyasha - my guilty pleasure. One of those very long-running shows, with almost a hundred and seventy episodes and four movies. About a girl who is the reincarnation of a priestess and who can travel through time to warring-states era Japan, where she hangs out with a half-demon and some of his buddies and helps to fight evil. This is a love it or hate it show, I suspect.
Urotsukidoji (Parts 1 and 2) - one of the higher profile hentai shows/movies (it's a series of episodes compiled into movies for the western markets, I believe). It may be hentai but honestly, it's really good (especially the first one - the third and fourth ones are not worth watching IMO). Basically about a war between demons, humans, and man-beasts, with the prophesied appearance of a super-powerful being called the Choujin to tip the balance in favour of whichever side can control him. More or less, anyway. The hentai stuff isn't really all that central to the plot, and I just skip past it.
Ebichu the Housekeeping Hamster - bizarre. NSFW. Pretty much every episode should be on Youtube. A must-see.

I only have it on VHS unfortunately, in a box set with AD Police and GenoCyber.eion wrote: Cyber City Oedo 808 - a cyberpunk-themed show with criminals turned policemen in exchange for a reduction in their sentences. I should probably try and convert all my videos to DVD sometime, but I think either my TV or my DVD recorder has Cackrovision protection, as I couldn't even play Star Wars last time I tried.
Also many of my VHS copies are dubbed, as that was all that was available at the time.

ETA: http://www.tv-links.co.uk/listings/3 seems to have improved its anime collection while i wasnt looking. still only streaming, but at least theyre watchable
EFTA: GLEE! Theyve finally got hold of Area88/Unsquadron! i is a happy bunny
not really a fan of anime too much teenage angst and flying through the air screaming someones name.
but I can't believe you havnt got ghost in the shell 1 and 2 up there (not the series the films) The 2nd one is better than the first, theyre abit bladerunnerish and matrixy themes but GITS was before. The animation in the second is amazing and I should know cuz I did it at uni whilst drinking smoking and pilaging Yarr!
Someone mentioned Samurai Champloo which is ace don't usually like anime series but got hooked on it, its got pirates in some episodes so a winner in my book yarr. The hip hop sound track is amazing too, good hip hop not gansta shit.
The 3d Appleseed films ok but just for the full 3d eye candy the plots ok but nowt amazing.
That's my 2p anyway or piece of eight.
