If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

User Interfaces

Post by Grimmie »

I've not tried Win 7 yet, but I hear it has a clearer interface with the new task bar doohickey.
Seen any interesting videos on UI for operating systems or concept programs?

I fell across 10/GUI just now, thought I'd share it.
It's an interesting idea, and would certainly mean having to move your hands around less to do simple actions.

DO want.

The finger pad idea struck me as a logical step, I never was struck on those big tables shown the other year with all the functionality because as mentioned, your hand blocks it but this is the logical way of solving that.

Wasn't initially sold on the Window management side, but seeing it in use there and having bascially a zoom out and in function to quick select has sold me.

I do want to play with it, but I'd probably still need a mouse for gaming depending on the levels of tactile feedback that pad would offer.

Hmm. Imagine being able to throw a grenade in one direction with one hand, and still shoot with a pop-gun in the other direction?
With 10 points of interaction you could make some really complex games.

Apple mobile devices are already doing some of this and the multi-touch shortcuts are very handy.

Even though you have two of them, your eyes can only look in one direction though, so the ten points on the screen would give you eyestrain flicking between them, or just be overwhelming.

I wondered throughout the vid how you were supposed to type with no hands, perhaps a head-dobber, but then the pic at the end showed either a massive keyboard or a touch area too small to get both hands on. I appreciate it's just a design idea, but I don't think there's enough desk real-estate to incorporate this, or that having to move both your hands and relocate the keys is a great idea.

My idea would be to expand the functionality of the mouse, maybe make it bigger with finger-slots and have sensors on each finger which could detect small movements in any direction. Then you could virtually pinch your thumb and index finger without actually having to move them very much.

This person begs to differ.
