Help! i have broken all my HL1 based games

Post by ProfHawking »

Half life 1, opposign horse, TFC etc
i set the video processing settings to Software mode. Not sure why, just to see i guess.
Anyway, now whenever i open the programs, I see nothing on the screen for about 1 second, then they minimise. If i open them, they minimise again.

How can i change them back to D3D or opengl or whatever!??

ive been googling without much luck

I'm unsure, and cannot check as I'm in work, but if the game comes with a .ini text file (possibly called halflife.ini or whatever the title of the game is - try a Windows file search for *.ini) there may be an option in there like bSoftwareRendering 1 or something.

If there is something similar, first MAKE A BACKUP OF THE .INI and then change bSoftwareRendering to 0 and bHardwareRendering to 1 (again, try a ctrl+f search within the .ini).

If there isn't an option like that above or no .ini file at all, you're possibly fucked and may need to reinstall. If you need any guidance with the .ini file, by all means get in touch. You'll have to pm me here at the 5punk as I'm in work...

You can use the command line switches to set it beck to OpenGL or Direct3D. Right-click on Half-Life in the Steam menu and click on properties. Click on the "Set launch options..." button and in the box type in either "-ogl" for OpenGL or "-d3d" for Direct3D. Also, you can try the "-windowed" switch to see if that helps at all.

Did you try unsetting the windowed stuff from in-game? If you did, did it go back to its old behavior?

in that case, I recommend the nuke from orbit approach. Uninstall the games from Steam and delete their folders in the Steamapps folder.

Try just deleting the game folder from steamapps/username and launching the game first, I doubt deleting the cfg files and redownloading them will make a difference since nothing should change within them.
