I need funnies

Post by Joose »

Right, I need some new comedy to watch. However, vast swathes of the currently popular "comedy" thats on the telly annoys the piss out of me, so im looking to you lot to supply me with alternatives, preferably easily sweepable.

To give a better idea of what I dont like, things like Little Britain and Catherine Tate make me want to hurt things. They are filled with characters that remind me of people in real life that make me want to hurt things. I know thats the idea, but the comedy in the scenes is entirely obscured by my desire to punch them all in the gonads. Bo Selecta also makes me want to do unpleasant things.

League of Gentlemen is also out. I dont know why, but the whole thing unsettles me.

Things I have watched and enjoyed are Black Books, Coupling, Spaced, Max and Paddy, Mighty Boosh, Green Wing, IT Crowd, Simpsons and Futurama. Probably a bunch of others I have forgoten, but you get the idea.

Suggestions?

Coupling rocks, hard. Very underated show. The title makes it sound mushy and soppy when it isn't at all.

Red Dwarf?

That Mitchell & Webb Look (or TM&W Sound, Radio 4) - Top quality sketches.
15 Storeys High - Very dry sitcom from Sean Lock. Criminally under-exposed by the beeb.
The Armando Iannucci Shows - Weird and insecure aceness.

Possibly:
Peep Show
Snuff Box - There can be no description of this.
Look Around You - Series one: 70s Schools programmes, Series two: Tomorrow's World

Sounds like a similar taste to my own. I've never liked cringe comedy, from Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em to The Office, just doesn't float my boat. I'd second Coupling, as suggested by Fear. A little bit like a British take on Friends I suppose, with the British sense of humour.
Have you thought about going back to some of the older stuff though? I got three series of Porridge at Christmas and I think it's hilarious, and I'd like to pick up MASH at some point too.

All of this (I haven't seen 15 Storeys though)

Iannucci is superb satire.

Look Around You is daft as fuck, and very funny. Don't bother with anything after the first series though.

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace

The Goon Show (can be found on BBC 7)

Blue Jam (Chris Morris' radio thingy, might be hard to find).

QI - Depends on the guests, but is very good most of the time.

Just thought - if you liked max & Paddy then there's no reason not to like Phoenix Nights. That had me howling.

For true comedy genious, look no further than Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister. Utterly timeless, yet to be surpassed. Also Dad's Army is up there with Porridge for chuckle points.

No, if it had 3 men in a bathtub on wheels rolling down a hill then it would be last of the summer wine.
