It's half and half, but those artists who are moaning that their music is being picked up by gamers via games should also be firing broadsides at the large music companies for pumping the charts full of manufactured crap (and shit RnB/Rap, and lots of dance music) for the past 15-20 years.

If it wasn't for the major charts being mostly full of crap and the consumer populations being told what to buy, they'd see a lot more varied stuff in the charts. The record companies could also do more to promote less "mainstream" acts and genres as well.

If you look back at the American billboard charts for the 70's and early to mid 80's, it's a lot more varied in styles than todays charts.

:above:

It's bad that people seem to exist on the music they hear through the clack of a guitar hero controller, in a computer game.

And I think Buzz is right, the 3 5punky spotify lists are mostly older music, and I can listen all day, but have shitney spears and such manufactured crap

Every time I hear "Hey, wasn't this song in Need For Speed?", I really just want to kill someone.

Guitar Hero itself is fine, I just don't understand the people who spend entire weeks practicing one song to perfect it for a computer game, I understand the feeling of completetion, but when you consider that time and dedication could actually set you really far along in learning a real instrument...the mind boggles.

Especially as there is no reward for the completetion in the game barring a fleeting hollow emptyness. Instruments keep on giving.

This is exactly why it's the worst game ever.

But if we got rid of it, we wouldn't get pseudo-musicians* being hilariously angry.

*people who can play an instrument but have only ever played music written by someone else.

What's wrong with people learning about music through games? It's better than them not learning about music at all. My love of 80s stuff is partly down to Vice City, but it's led to me looking up hundreds of songs.

I don't think it's bad or depressing that people are being introduced to a wider range of music because of games like guitar hero - lets face it, if they weren't then they'd probably never experience such variety just because of the manufactured spam all over the radio and charts. Thats whats depressing.

Also jack white is an annoying twat

also also those guitar hero/rockband games can sod off

My buddy has bought all the GH and RB stuff including drums and light/smoke machine. He plays guitar on hard/expert and his gf sings. I drink and play the base on easy otherwise it ruins my buzz ;)

I used to have a Fender+amp and I regret never learning how to play it. I will not put effort into a game that doesn't even correctly simulate a real guitar.

However, I am happy that I found a whole bunch of new bands/songs that I like. Our radio stations here are even suckier than the charts. Satellite Radio is pretty good but, not worth paying for it. MP3's are win.

I think the risk is when people learn about music/bands because they're in a computer game, and don't actually go on to explore the genres; I was fixing a laptop for a kid next door recently, and all the music he had was from plastic instrument game™

However, I know a lot of my original interest in music came from Quake, and a biking video.

But I actually spent a tiny bit of time finding out what it was, and downloading everything I could.

I like GH cause I like music and I like games. Music + Games = mega win in my book. I have every DDR released in the US for PS1, PS2 and x-box with a full size metal dance pad. If it's a game that you can make/move/whatever to music I prolly have it. Though I never got around to buying RB as I don't have $300 or whatever crazy nonsense it is for the full package. Though Beetles RB might push me over the edge.

Imho, if 1 kid that plays GH or RB and decides he likes the music and finds more, or decides to learn to play a real instrument the game has done a good thing.

Maybe that new 360 motion sensor thingy will open the doors to "Orchestra Conductor Hero". Hmmm, guess you could also use 2 wii motes.

Singstar has too many versions out for me to have all of them :P , though I want to grab Abba just to annoy the kiddies in the house. Even though my voice says not to get singing games I have a few, along with I think all the karaoke revolutions.

It's actually the only music game I've ever played, unless you count Space Channel 5.

We found it was pretty doable by simply grunting 'uhh' in time instead of actually rapping the words.
