Armed Assault 2 (Arma 2) vs Operation Flashpoint 2

Post by friznit »

Quick background summary for those who don't know:

Operation Flashpoint was an open ended military simulation written by Bohemia Interactive (BIS) and published by Codemasters.

BIS went on to write Armed Assault (ArmA), based largely on their Virtual Battlefield System (VBS), which they also flogged to the USMC amongst others.

Codemaster retained the copyrights for the Operation Flashpoint name, and are releasing Op Flashpoint 2 this year, based on the same open ended military sim, lots of toys etc.

BIS are also releasing a sequel, ArmA 2.

They are both coming out for console and PC.

I was a Flashpoint nut in it's day, and played ArmA a fair amount as well. There were several things lacking from both, not to mention the 'polish' one would expect from a modern FPS, however much of a sim it may be.

It remains to be seen if BIS can come up with a good enough game to entice people away from Codemaster's effort which will undoubtedly be shinier, if not quite as 'hardcore'. I expect the Sim Nuts will plump for ArmA 2 and scream blue geeky murder at the Op Flash 2 crowd, whilst secretly admitting that it's actually more fun to play.

I'm looking forward to both, I'll probably end up playing whichever runs better, especially server-side. as ARMA was basically un-hostable

I'm hoping for something between a co-op, freeform BEEF and OFP. The games of Flashpoint we had were quite good, but for some reason I just found ArmA too much to get a grip on.

Both of them are ultra real sims apparently. Ridiculous levels of space, free-form, bullet drop, winds effects, fancy AI etc.

OFP 2 has had the 2 dropped off the name because of the tension going on between both companies. It's got a sdtupid console friendly subtitle now.

To be quite honest they both look quite similar and seem to offer very similar things. So similar in fact that I think most people will settle on one of them, possibly the one that arrives first, or has more guns, or is wasier to admin or whatever.

Idd Pete, which is why I think that despite being a BIS fanboi I'll no doubt enjoy the Codemasters one more, since BIS can make a good sim but fail at making good games.

"I do declare!"

Other variant is WIDD for "Well, I do declare!", it's what you say when you are OUTRAGED and UPPER CLASS and are sporting either a MONOCLE or LARGE FEATHERED HAT
