I dunno, most aren't bad games, or are at least worth playing so you can say you have. How about 30 games you should play immediately before dying, like 48 straight hours of Starcraft?

They're not bad, but I wouldn't consider CS:S a game to play before you die.

Also, immediately before? OpenTTD :)

I can't see the rest of the list cause work bans ALL THINGS THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE FUN but CS:S? I would. The only reason we don't see it as fantastic any more is because we've over played it.

For over 4 Years. The fact we still fire it up again and it draws big crowds are a testament to its popularity.

Now, y'see, I could accept that for CS 1.6, which is almost 10 years old, and is still played a lot (right now, there's 35,000 people playing 1.6, 45,000 playing CS:S)

Anyway, I'm seeing this list as 30 games to play before you die. Not 30 games that are pretty good and long lasting, one of which is a sequel to what was, 10 years ago, something very special, and IMO probably helped get online gaming where it is today.

Personally, my 30 long lasting games would contain stuff like CS:S, UT1-3, CoDUO, WoW, BF2.

But my 30 games before you die wouldn't get those, i'd think more towards STALKER, Portal, Half Life series, hell, possibly even bioshock.

You wouldn't include online games in your 30 games before you die list?

I'd agree CS 1.5/6 pretty much made online gaming what it is today but I think CS:S is a vast improvement and definately a must play and will likely last as long as CS 1.6.

I'd probaby show CS:S first out of all the must play PC games online, with HL1/2 being the top of the list just for the story and how revolutionary the sauce engine was at the time.

I think Berk's erring more towards games that were revolutionary, milestones or were sublime.

CS on the original engine was one of those types, CS:S is just an upgraded version.

I'd include UT1 and Q3 as a combination, as you can pick either or, but they both represent the jump for multiplayer games only (well, barring bots). They had no single player story line, and they were the first to do so.

Likewise, Max Payne would be on there, it's a good game, but it really was one of the first to go bananas with photorealistic textures and it introduced Bullet Time to the world.

I'm surprised Sim City 2 isn't on the list, nor Fallout 2 (although, Planetscape is there, which is roughly the same type of game).

I'd also include Audiosurf if I had a gap to fill.

I'd not actually noticed that.

But if it's a game to play before I die, I want it to be outstanding, have a damn fine story and to some degree, leave me with something lasting (like the creepy feeling from stalker, or would you kindly? from bioshock)

I suspect I did actually make the not MP distinction to a degree in that respect, and by not adding other games to my very short lists, like, Jops and swat with 5punk, absolutely no doubt they'd go in the before you die list.

Problem I have with online games before you die is that well, they're so fucking changeable, Pretty much all of them depend on the 9-63 other players being about equal skill to you to be fun, it's no fun if you're getting raped, or just destroying the other players every time.

I think it depends how you view "30 PC Games to Play Before You Die"

Personally, I'd try to get damn near the history of games, along with simply unbeatable, outstanding games that excelled in what they did, online games would feature, but far lower on the list than SP or co-op games.

Don't get me wrong, CS:S is good fun, but genre defining game? not really. no.

I'd say everyone should experience a 64-player match of BEEF, with mostly competent and fairly matched players on both teams. At it's best, BEEF is one of the best multiplayer games ever made. At worst it's terrible, but the highs are very much worth the lows in my opinion.

Otherwise, I think that list had a lot of good games, and a few forgettable games. That wouldn't be my list, but I can see why they picked those.

The last one's not a game and apart from the Valve ones, GTA and Rome that to me looks like a list of Games That Now Look Like Ass and Games That Will Frustrate The Tits Off You, some of them falling into both categories.

Not quite sure as to why they picked episode 2, instead of HL2, HL2 was incredibly innovative and features maybe the best physics engine to date, not to mention the excellent story, something which can be hard to find these days.
Not that episode 2 wasn't good, mind.

I probably enjoyed it least of the series so far and never got around to finishing it. HL1 and 2 I've played at least five times each.

The car was a bit frustrating, and the strider fight could be a bit challenging (but mainly frustrating) as well, but it was way better then episode 1, since it showed us new environments and actually told us a bit more about the story.

Also, why haven't we heard anything about episode 3 yet?

Valve is going in Stealth mode about it, because they know that anything they say will haunt them when it's released. That and they have a lot of people working on TF2 and L4D still.

This thread has almost stolen the thunder of two that I wanted to do as a precursor to articles. Why do we need to play these games before we die? Because they're good? Innovative? Influential? It's too subjective.
