An unofficial version of dead air versus has been out for a while, maybe they just changed it so you can actually join them easily through the normal method of joining a game
I managed to try one of the other maps and it's just the single player map so you don't get any of the special climbing bits so I wouldn't bother hunting them down
A required update for Left 4 Dead is now available. Please run hldsupdatetool to receive it. The specific changes include:
Survival Mode:
- New gameplay Mode
- 16 maps including Last Stand
- Leaderboards
- 7 new achievements
Versus Changes:
- Fixed a case where versus team score would continue to be recalculated after the score panel was displayed
- Fixed an issue with recalculating the versus score health bonus for a player when they are rescued from being incapacitated
- Fixed being able to start a swing as an infected, then teleport to the survivors and have the claw swing hit a survivor
- Fixed a case where teleporting to the survivors would not reset the ability timer
- Fixed an exploit where you could load the chamber of a weapon with bullets by holding down the melee key
- Fixed a case where it was not possible to join a game while it was in a finale
- Fixed a rare case where listen servers would speed up the game over time
- Removed convars related to melee fatigue
- Fixed a case where infected players would get a respawn time on their initial spawn into a map
Server Changes:
- Made ms_horse_dedicated_server not require cheats
- Add a message when queuing a heartbeat
- Simplified setting of game mode
- Removed convars director_no_human_zombies and director_holdout_mode
- Added mp_gamemode [coop,versus,survival]
General:
- Added lobby join and leave messages

I've got a bronze on the lighthouse one, about 5 or so minutes I think. The zombie hordes and specials do kick in something mental on survival mode, tried hospital lift, sewer bridge and that bit where you flip a switch on a roller door just after getting off the streets on the way to the hospital. The new map works quite well, the old ones go from manageable to fucking batshit crazy in about .5 of a second. Think we need to play some more of this again.
Okay, well I tried this and I must say, I'm impressed. It's a simple mode but it's a fucking uncontrollable chaos. High potential for shouty drunken night game.
Basic outlay: Waves come about every minute initially, slightly reduced every wave. Being vomited on also summons a minor wave. Every wave after wave 2 has a tank. At the 6th minute, two tanks spawn each wave. Bronze time is 4 minutes, silver is 7, I presume gold is 10.
My best so far is 6 minutes on Mercy Rooftop, and even that with three utterly retarded bots.
What is annoying though is that every wave can potentially lock you down. By the third wave you will probably see at least 3 smokers and 3 hunters, not to mention the tank and the boomers.
