Vault 101 - The Fallout 3 Spoiler Thread

Post by Dog Pants »

I wasn't going to bother, but things are happening in my game that I don't think are scripted but might be. If they're not this game is awesome.

So I'm setting out the format of putting the quest title above the spoiler so you know if you can safely read it or not.

So, here's what I'm wondering about so far:

Mr Burke in Megaton:
Spoiler:
I squealed on him and the sheriff went to arrest him. No matter what I did I couldn't stop Burke shooting him dead when he turned his back. Fucker, I'm sure Simm would have been useful for a good while.
The Family gang quest (Blood Ties?)
Spoiler:
I arranged for The Family to protect the village in return for blood packs. I then went back to the village and broke the good news, and everyone was happy and I got a warm fuzzy feeling. Then after I spoke to the vampire kid I went outside to see three armoured Mercs butchering everyone. They killed everyone but the kid. I was gutted.

Then when I went back to The Family to find out where the fuck they'd been they accused me of murdering everyone.
This happen to anyone else, or was it just randomness?

For the first one, the same thing happened to me.

For the second quest I did exactly the same as you but
Spoiler:
no mercs turned up - as far as I'm aware everyone is still alive. Were they generic mercs or Talon mercs?

Spoiler:
The talon mercs get to become a real fucking 'mare they do. Always popping up with a bounty on your head when you leave a building or tube station. I did rest in the wasteland once and found them outside when I woke up.

For saving simm I positioned myself in the way, waited for burkes gun to appear on his hip then hit v, shot him in the face with my pistol and the sheriff survived, took a few goes.
Tenpenny towers -
Spoiler:
I fed everyone to ghouls because I couldn't be arsed to find everyone and tell them the ghouls were moving in. Ah well.
Anyone been the nuka cola plant? I wandered into it randomly -
Spoiler:
The mirelurks inside have been mutated by the spilled quantum cola and are exceedingly hard and can turn invisible, I did let out a girly scream when they appeared right in front of me.
Anyone been to 'the best town in the usa', Arndale iirc. I stumbled into there as well, good job I talked to the old man first!

If you're not planning on working the main quest for a bit, if you discover Vault 112, just turn around. I can't say any more without spoiling much but yeah don't go in there if you're not supposed to for the main quest. It will be really confusing for a start because you won't know wtf is going on.

As for Megaton,
Spoiler:
I just entered VATS the instant the sheriff turned his back and fired off a couple shotgun shells from my combat shotgun into Burke's head. I was surprised it took two shots from point blank range to kill him.
And yeah those Talon Company assholes are tough motherfuckers. I took out their leader already though. That bastard can take a fucking beating. I hit him with I think 5 or 6 missiles and he still had over half of his health. Thank god I destroyed his missile launcher from the start or I would have been screwed. He's located in
Spoiler:
Fort Bannister which is almost due West of Vault 101, South West of Arefu

I guess I just did the Simm thing too early, as I only had a 10mm pistol and it just took too many shots. Mind you,
Spoiler:
Burke did shoot Simm through the wall of the bar in my game
.

At any rate, I like how random events can be so game changing.

I killed Burke
Spoiler:
before he even got a shot off, but the Sheriff had disappeared from the bar and turned up dead across the other side of Megaton. I guessed it was unavoidable, so I looted him.

I stumbled upon that place by accident. I was taking so much fire from mercs and robots that i had to go INTO the fort to hide, and ended up exploring the place with a StealthBoy and ultimately got to the leader.

I hit her once with a knife in the back, and then the Mysterious Stranger appeared and revolvered her fucking head right off.
Spoiler:
Then I took her unique combat knife, Occam's Razor, which gets about 6 consecutive VATS attacks and does a shitload of damage. Hell yeah.
.

Side note: the Dart Gun is fantastic.
Spoiler:
Cripples both the targets legs, so they hurf about looking ridiculous, and deals hefty damage over time

The Shishkabob is the best Melee weapon I've found so far. It sets people on fire when you hit them, totally awesome.

As for Burke,
Spoiler:
I tried to pickpocket him once, after he told me his crap, but I failed and the whole fucking bar went off to kill me. I reloaded and completely avoided him, so I have Simm alive, and he got me a house and shit.

I did the same as DP with Burke, but
Spoiler:
managed to take him down with the 10mm pistol, just as he was drawing (I knew he was going to pull some shit, so I was watching his hands). Simms then said "Thanks for saving my ass back there, I guess I'm getting slow in my old age"
I had an oddity with Arefu too, which I had thought was a glitch. I'd
Spoiler:
saved them and agreed protection with the family
, went back once, saw the guy
Spoiler:
the family had sent
back, all ok. Came back later (being chased by a mirelurk which ate their cow and run away) walked into Arefu and said hi - only saw the old guy there. After I spent a moment gazing into the distance for no particular reason, the old guy suddenly shouted at me and opened fire. Since I assumed it was a glitch, I reloaded a save, but it may have been deliberate if I'd maybe led someone there inadvertantly, or if they just noticed the cow.

Haven't managed to get a house yet, although I did find a couple of beds that go green once you kill everyone nearby. First one is near Big Town and the second was behind the first subway entrance. Sleeping for a mere hour seems to max out your health, which is very welcome given I'm typically limping around on half or lower, scrounging every bit of irradiated mystery meat.

Also, I'd really like somewhere to store stuff, being a bit of a weapon-hoarder.

Jack, I'm not sure but I think if you find a friendly base somewhere and you're able to loot the lockers without getting done for theft, you can store your shit there. the containers don't appear to reset like in Oblivion. I've had stuff stored in the Brotherhood lockers in the Galaxy News building for a good few game days now, and it's all still there.

Incidentally, did any of you accept Mr Burke's offer?

Also, very early main quest spoiler (ie straight after Megaton)
Spoiler:
did all of you have to face off against a GIANT super mutant with the Brotherhood of Lions outside the Galaxy Radio Outpost? Shit myself when he came bounding up the road.

Everywhere's red, even when I've saved their asses/completed the quest chain/etc. It's only where I've slaughtered everyone, like the shop, that they're green. Guess I'll stash a few in there and hope it doesn't disappear, although a proper house would be better.

Yeah, happened to me too. I
Spoiler:
took down the Behemoth outside GNR and then talked to the bitch. I proceeded to the door and right before I went in I had literally six lasers pass through me. That's right, the Brotherhood guys outside just attacked me for no reason. Oddly, the ones inside were friendly.
Also,
Spoiler:
to get a house, all you need to do is defuse the bomb.

Guys, it's all well and good blanking out spoilers, but you need to note what they are so we know if they'll spoil anything before we read it. I've not got to Galaxy Radio yet and already I know more than I'd like to about it.

Spoiler:
I did yo momma!
In regard to tandino's note about galaxy radio-
Spoiler:
I already had a mini nuke by that point so I decided to try it and then grab the spare one from the body, then I irradiated myself quite badly by running over to the corpse to loot it. Gotta love how it's got a car door on it's arm as a little shield.
As for what bubbles said about galaxy radio -
Spoiler:
The brotherhood guys open up on you if you even look at the locked door without using the intercom, bit twitchy on the triggers aren't they! Especially given you just killed a fucking GIANT mutant that was attempting to eat them.

Regarding GNR
Spoiler:
I didn't actually get to the GNR plaza, i managed to explore my way to rivet city, and it completed the find GNR quest!

Also, regarding the final choice at end of game:
Spoiler:
FUCK YOU FAWLKES! THE ONLY REASON I BROUGHT YOUR MUTATED ARSE ALONG WAS SO YOU COULD FLIP PROJ. PURITY ON SO NEITHER I NOR THE PALADIN HAD TO! ONE JOB YOU HAD, AND YOU FUCKING MUFFED IT!
