Windows Fista SP2 Beta Next Week
There is a post today on the Windows Fista Team Blog that says a beta of Service Pack 2 for Fista will be in the hands of testers next week. Some of the features to be included with SP2 are native Blu-ray recording in Fista, Windows Search 4.0, a Bluetooth 2.1 feature pack and more.

Following the success of Windows Fista Service Pack 1 last spring, we have been working hard on Windows Fista Service Pack 2. As a part of the development and testing process, we're going to start by providing a small group of Technology Adoption Program customers with Windows Fista SP2 Beta for evaluation next Wednesday, October 29. The final release date for Windows Fista SP2 will be based on quality. So we'll track customer and partner feedback from the beta program before setting a final date for the release.

I'm still pretty keen on Fista, but I'll not buy it. Windows 7 might be worth paying for though.

By what I can tell, Windows 7 will be to Fista what 98SE was to 98.

A bit different on top, but a larger change under the bonnet, and it has the chance to be good. Possibly.

I'm expecting more 2k pro to XP, lots of refinement and improvement, but nothing massive.

It should be 98 to XP, but it appears they're not using the fancy new lean kernel they wrote. Sounds like we're getting DEFINITELY NOT Fista (Service Pack 3)

Hence I reckon 98 -> 98SE, it's what I expect, if it's better and more that'll be good, but I'm not holding out hope.

A lot of what I've read/heard is pretty much that W7 consists of mostly features that wern't finished in time to become part of Fista alongside tweaks and alterations.

Don't forget it's MS: give a product a paintjob and a facelift, market it as being "new and improved", hey presto, "new" product available for the uninformed masses to buy.

God no, ME was shit. Fista isn't (now).
ME was a halfway house between 98 and 2000 code and it showed.
Fista was released waaay too early, with most of its features broken or incomplete, but its flaws have been addressed in updates.
What can't be fixed though is its reputation. That's why we're getting Windows 7.

Yup, I quite like Fista now, and Windows 7 seems to fix the slightly heavy footprint, which is the only thing that really bothers me about it generally.

I love my 8800GTS but I really wish I had gone for the 640mbs rather than the 320mbs.

Off the top of my head- stability, sleep/hibernate, local and network copying, UAC... certainly more, big and small.

It seems to depend on a lot of things. Generally I find it to be about the same as XP. That's still rubbish, mind.
