The Pants Friday Question of the Week: Embarrassing Moments

Post by Dog Pants »

I know it's sunday, but I'm even more bored than I am on fridays and I didn't get one in then.

We've all had our gaming moments when we wished the earth would just swallow us up. Reliving them is theraputic, and it gives us all a laugh. So share the wealth, what's your most embarrassing moment in gaming?

Mine was soon after I'd joined 5punk. I joined a game of COD:UO and jumped on TS. I didn't know anybody that well, but I tried to join in with the conversation anyway. Trouble was, the conversation made no sense. People were laughing over kills that hadn't happened and talking about bits of the map that weren't there. It was like they were playing a completely different game. Which, in fact, they were. I'd inadvertently joined the CS:S room, but was playing COD:UO. Oops!

The first ever games I played online generally consisted of being embarrassingly bad at everything I did. This was back in the day of good old dial up connection playing TFC on Wireplay. Compared to then I am a veritable computer wiz these days, so you can imagine just how shockingly ignorant I was of computers back then (and it's probably something to do with the reason I ran up a massive phone bill having left a map pack downloading all day whilst I was at school).

Can't really think of anything specific at the moment - just general TS things like breaking myself, laughing at nothing and sitting on my own testicles (5.30).

I really broke myself last night on jops. I still have a slight pain in my sternum from it. I was a bit embarrassed at how much I giggled, all because I was driving a car round in circles and it was driving through houses, over roofs and under the ground for a few hectic seconds. I blame the vodka milkshake.

Asking a load of 5punkers 'who's 5punk craig then' in a CSS game only to be told, 'he's craig, he's a 5punker, you fucking idiot' in return.

The time I went to my cousins house and he was having a dod game with his clan. I wasn't that bad at online fps by that point, but that night saw me killing myself, my team, the floor, the sky and everything else but the other team. I can only surmise that I was too sober because it was like the first time I had ever touched mouse and keyboard, I played like I'd had a mild brain aneurysm or a stroke.

I joined their server a week later when I was home and showed them I could play quite well, but the damage was done.

Not really suffered from much gaming embarrassment, nothing lasting anyway.

There's the talking bollocks on teamspeak, but we all do that, so it's hardly unexpected.

I also don't think I've done anything really embarrassing, stupid probably, nothing really odd.

Even those couple of weeks where I seemingly lost the ability to even utter one sentence of English correctly over TS wasn't embarrassing, just amusing.

Even thinking back to my EvE time I've not done anything really bad, Rabb's has the 2 smartbomb incidents, I think the worst I've done is lose a 'geddon I'd worked hard for (my 2nd bs and I was broke) within 5 minutes in a level 3 (going back 2 years, so when some level 3's were hardish), oh, and that time I lost one of the Amarr interceptors (not the Crusader, the other one) on my 2nd or 3rd outing with Raptus Regaliter to a blaster fitted Vexor. More suprised than anything.

Probably being muted for half the evening.

I don't tend to get embarrased at my own foolishness, people at work have expressed their incredulity at this, like when I totally show myself up in a meeting but just sit there calmly where anyone else would have gone bright red.

There was one time I did blush most profusely - we were in the student bar after work and messing around flicking bits of paper at each other. I attempted a full horse shot towards my mate opposite, but spooned it wide, where it made a beeline for the hanging-out arse-crack of a girl student sitting at an adjacent table.

I suspect, as she turned around, she was readily able to identify the culprit, with a face like the surface of the sun, trying to look everywhere except at her or his three mates sniggering at his reaction.

i have had tons and tons of embarrasing real life moments, and plenty 5punk ones too. Like when i mentioned my motherboard doesn't support SLI, after i posted the specs that clearly stated it did. Or saying something over teamspeak that is either completely unrelated, entirely besides the point or just plain nonsense. I blame not being able to do two things at once and general lack of concentration. (in this case gaming and talking/following a conversation) It has cost me my entire education, since most teachers thought i didn't want to pay attention or didn't care.

I couldn't think of anything embarrassing as such, not that was game related. Until EVE was mentioned, and I remembered the battleship farce:

Months of personal effort, and an impressive effort by the (then not very organised) 5punkorp, had resulted in our very first Battleship; my very own Tempest.

I took it out for a couple of flybys, and blew the crap out of some particularly feeble rats with it. I was so proud.

I finally plucked up the courage to take on someone more challenging. I was popping low level rats, and a couple of players warped in, obviously up to no good. I had plenty of time to leg it, but saw that they were not all that, and I could easily take them down in my setup and score my first proper PvP kill. Go Me!

I locked on to them while I was still way out of range of their guns, and brought my incredi-huge cannon around to aim at them. "Awesome!" thought I. Nothing happened. Hmm. Click the guns again. Nothing happened. Worried now. Clickclickclick. Shit, they are getting quite close. Clickclick. Oh crap. No ammo.

Playing Commandos co-op with my dad quite a few years ago. The way it works is you each take half of the characters. We were playing the map with the Eiffel Tower and with a large mansion towards the top of the map. We'd pretty much mopped up the enemy, just tidying up in the mansion. I am trying to sneak up on someone and click next to them. Without realising I'd double clicked on the window instead. The next thing is a view change to outside the mansion and my character diving out of the upstairs window to his death (also triggering the alarm). Much lols follows.
