I didn't realise that, for some reason I thought it was a sequel.
I'd quite like to play Guild Wars, but I don't have a personal life (or rather the lack of one) that allows me to play a MMO

Me too. It seems like it's worth a try, especially with no sub fee but I don't have enough time to play the games I have now enough.

i recall reading that factions was a standalone game and that you dont need the original guild wars to play it, you just cant play through the original game, i would say get factions as it has more proffesions and features and wot not

My brother has factions and its a standalone game, however it appears to be the exact same game as the original guild wars just with new models and quests...

factions is more of the same in a way, same engine and stuff, but much steeper learning curve, you're like level 18 or so by the time you sear, then the rest of the game (i assume) is hard as something very hard.

Factions is completely stand alone from the first Guild Wars, which has been rectoactively referred to as prophecies. What Berk said is the basic jist of it. Your character gets bigger in a faster manner in Factions. I would also say, however, that it's got a good little tutorial at the very beginning that you didn't get from Prophecies, and they sort of ease you into the game itself, but in a fast manner, if that makes any sense. :likesitall:

  Prophecies, the first one, is a lot easier with less weapons, armour and classes. Factions on the other hand is a impossible game to beat with alot more weapons, armour and two new proffesions. I say its impossible to beat, its not but it takes a hell of a long time to beat. I'm level 12 on the mainland and already all the monsters are level 20. Its only after the second mission. They owned me! :) :)

as Craig says, it's faster, harder and more intense thena the original.
it encourages much more co-op play than prophicies, which can be played almost totally with the NPC henchmen from start to finish, with just one or two exceptions. (at least as far as droknar's forge, anyhow)
Factions will require a higher level of human interaction and will be far more beatable with larger groups of real players.
The Mainland's 1st co-op combines play from both GW:P anf GW:F in a huge battle-type scenario which is nigh-on impossible to do without lots of real peoples being involved.
To answer the original post, for a long-lived game that you will return to over a long period, I find GW:Prophicies to be the kiddy, for a harder to play, but possibly more rewarding version, go for factions.
If anyone else wahts to try it and needs a hand, feel free to drop me a line when I'm on there, just add "Running Clam" to your friends list and whisper me. (OK, I'm part of the 4rthur guild, but shush, I'll still help anyone who asks.)
lastly, and possibly one of the most refreshing points, given other on-line game happenings, there can be no PK's inside the game.
