OBLIVION!

Post by Lateralus »

Ok, I know its not a MMO, but it definitely is a RPG.

I thought I'd start a thread for people to talk about their experiences so far, and post screenies of their characters etc. Not got any of my Ninja Wood-Elf yet, but I'll get some later.

Useful Info

Screenshots

To take screenshots you need to edit your \My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini file and change bAllowScreenShot=0 to bAllowScreenShot=1 (Thanks Spoodie :likesitall: )

FPS
To show your FPS press ` (the key next to 1 and tab) to bring up the console and type in tdt

Game Crashes

Taken from the readme file: "ALT+TAB may cause some game instability with some hardware configurations and is not advised."
In addition to this, since xfire currently doesn't support the game, the popup over fullscreen for when you get a message doesn't work for me, and caused the only crash I've had when it minimised it automatically. This will be fixed in thursday's patch when Oblivion support will be added, but until then I'm just going to be turning xfire off when playing.

Model your own face:
http://www.facegen.com/ is the site for the company who created the face modelling software for the game. If you get a two profile and one straight-on pictures of your face, it will render a 3D model of it for you. You can then note the slider settings for tone and shape, and recreate it for your character in-game.

General Points about Gameplay

If you haven't played the previous games, especially Morrowind, then you really need to read the manual. It may sound obvious, but I know that I for one usually don't bother with most games, but for this game you really need it.

Some people have commented that the main quest is very hard, but I expect that its because they're attempting it with low-level characters. In this game, the best way to get ahead is to join whichever guild is most appropriate to your character, or even better, join several. On the most part the missions don't clash so you can happily bumble along doing missions for them all and rising through the ranks and your player's levels. Guilds are found in most major towns, but there aren't any in the main city.

I've only played about 4 hours so far, but I'm at level 4 now I think, and at least 2 of my attributes are in the mid 60s, and the rest are doing quite well too. Sneak is so far my best skill, and I'm nearly a journeyman already. I like the way that you get new abilities as the rank goes up rather than a fairly ambiguous "just gets better". For example, when sneaking I currently get a 3x damage bonus for shooting someone, and a 6x damage bonus for using a one-handed weapon if I attack undetected. This means that in most places I've been so far I'm getting instant kills which is nice. I'm also enjoying the fact that casting spells is a lot easier than in previous games, and blocking is no longer a passive skill.

So how is everyone else doing then? What characters have you gone for in terms of race and skills? And lets see some screenies too!

Well I'm a Spellsword Breton, using blades, block, heavy armour, destruction, alteration, restoration and illusion. I think I'm about level 4, and to be honest I've not even touched the main quest yet.

Currently I'm getting myself established at guilds, following up on rumours and generally exploring. When in towns I tend to change out of my armour and into a rather dashing silk burgundy outfit with matching trousers, and gold trimmed shoes (note: always put on soft shoes when sneaking).

I'll try an post some screenshots later on.

Hehe, another few sneak levels and I won't get any penalty for the weight of my boots when sneaking :)

I only did the first couple of things on the main quest because I was hoping that you'd get given a horse, and I was right. I can't afford 2,500 to buy one yet! Going to go find a guild or three to join next though.

Grrr, yet another reason for me to get home soon. Question is, will it be good enough to:

A. Play on secondary comp instead of Eve
B. Play on my main comp instead of Eve
C. Play instead of Eve

I reckon B. For a while.

I've got a dark elf knight, level 3 I think. Havent really been doing much of the main quest yet, found a couple of caves to explore, had a wander around and managed to get banged up in jail for some reason. I knew that I would get a horse given to me early on as it said that in the review, which was handy.

The speechcraft thing is a nice little mini-game.

Hah! I got journeyman sneak just before i looked on here. You can get cheaper horses in other places, I think you can get them for 1000 in chorrol.

I'm happy sticking to the horse I was given for now, but I'll probably steal one of the black ones when I can. Its a shame you can't fight from the saddle, but meh. I'm more interested in a house to be honest. Had a guy in Anvil try to sell me his mansion for 5000. Think I'm up to about 700 now and thats it!

I'm debating whether or not to start another character already. I may go for some kind of battle mage, but the guy I'm playing as now isn't really enthralling me to be honest.

I am a cat person, and the soldier bloke said I was a bard, so I stuck with that. Then I went through a portal and got creamed. I don't really want to be a bard, as it sounds like a portmanteau of "bastard" and "retard", so I shall go back to the coming outside bit and change it.

Like I did with morrowind, Ive trundled out the two classic Joose choices for RPG's. My main guys is technically a Knight, but hes more a kind of Paladin type. Always does the Right Thing™, uses the most shiny armour/sword combo he can find, has lots of healing and defensive spells.

The secondary one is a sneaky, theiving bastard, using light armour, favoring the bow and smaller swords, and the more nasty spells. Fun Thing To Do In Oblivion #24: Paralize someone, then push them off cliffs/down stairs/off balconies. Chortle as their rigid form gets its skull caved in through rocky impacts. Feel evil. Love it.

Yeah I just restarted with a new guy, and I've saved it just at the end of that tutorial bit so I can just load up and choose the character straight off next time. 8)

However, I've noticed that I'm not levelling up as quickly as I used to, because the majics I've chosen are only really used in fights, and I've not had many yet. Time to go looking for that first gate I feel.

I are a Battlemage now, which rather highlights my indecision, and I'm strolling around the roads killing skeletons and stuff.

Also I found this inside a wolf:

Presumably some mix-up with Goldilocks and Little Red Riding Hood.

Get a nice reward for helping him.

Can we have a "Let's help eachother with quests" thread? The Next of Kin mission for the Dark Brotherhood is really giving me grief. I may wander off and thief for a while.

I died without having saved after killing 6 of those damn bitey fish. Is there an easier way to kill them than waving a sword around randomly and trying not to drown, unsuccessfully.

So start one. Personally I can't help as I don't know of the quest but someone might.

I managed to kill one but decided it was too risky to continue, being a knight with heavy armour I'm not best suited to underwater battles. Maybe with the help of water breathing spells or potions?

Ooh, I missed this thread, don't usually bother with this forum, no beard you see... Well I'm a Dark Elf Battlemage about level 4 I think, currently trying to improve Blunt and Conjuration,

Some thoughts and stuff wot I dun:

I've done one Oblivion gate, and about 4 stages of the main quest, at one point I had 2 guys to escort for a main quest bit but just took them with me to do loads of other quests, they were super hard and helped a lot!!.

I've done a couple of caves and quite a few quests in Chorral so give me a shout if you need help for Chorral quests (They were all pretty easy though)

I stumbled across an Oblivion gate in the middle of nowhere, gave me quite a fright, but was really cool to just happen across it and it not be part of the main quest.

I hate the Persuasion wheel, I just end up bribing.

Joined the Mage and Fighters Guilds, if you want easy money take stuff from the guild halls (which you are allowed to do once you're a member) and go sell it.

And finally I've also had the game crash at Random intervals, sometimes once in four hours, sometime every 5 minutes, tried a billion different things to solve it but to no avail, meh.

Sorry its a bit dark, I'll get some better ones if I can next time I come into contact with them, but I thought there zombie fans may appreciate it! :)

I like this little mini-game and the lockpicking one, I think I've got both sussed out now. :boogie:

I'm still getting random crashes as well but installing the beta nvidia drivers that were specifically designed for Oblivion seems to have made some improvement to the stability: http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_downl ... 84.25.html

The frame rate is still bugging me though. My setup is supposed to be well over the required but I have to run at 1024x768 to get more than 12fps for external areas, even then it rarely gets to 30fps, overclocking the GPU by 50Mhz seems to help a bit. Time to check out the tweaking guides I think.
