FREE GAME! ANARCHY ONLINE! WOO!

Post by Joose »

As you are probably aware, im quite the MMO fan.

Even more so when im not paying for them (i love beta's!)

But ive just discovered one better than that. If you sign up for anarchy online before jan 15th, you get it for free. For a year. The whole thing.

woo!

Really? I have noticed another 5punker play on this all the time, and wondered what it was.

Seeing as I've never played a MMO game before, I may give this a try, just to see what it's all about.

Have you got a link, I'm "googled out" after yesterday :?

ooh, that was rather bumgayish of me, i completely forgot the link. Here tis:

http://www.anarchy-online.com/free/ad_c ... ecampaign/

I would advise going for the torrent, as the direct download seems to have collapsed. Its only 800 meg, so shouldnt take too long.

Wow that's awesome, will definitely get torrenting tonight, the most important question is: Is it actually any good?

I guess we'll find out soon enough!. Check this out from the beginners guide:

Anarchy Online is a science fiction MMONG
and
Anarchy Online is also different from other games in the genre by offering random missions and dungeons
Sci-fi dungeons?!? confusing... yet intriguing

They kept calling the deadzone complexes in EVE "dungeons" for ages. That made me laugh.

As far as i can tell, AO is your basic RPG, just with nanotechnology instead of magic, and its set on a colony in the future, rather than a mystic land of faries and dragons. It'll probably be fairly recognisable to anyone whos ever played an RPG before.

Is it any good? buggered if i know. But its free, so at least we will be getting value for money :D

EDIT: ive just realised that the download finishing will coincide almost exactly with my girlfriend arriving for the weekend. Bumclouds.

EDIT OF THE EDIT: hurrah! she has overslept, and is therefore going to be late! i may have time for an hour or so in it. Faster, bittorrent, faster!

hmm, well, ive had a bit of a go, and here are my first impressions:

Its not bad. Feels nicer than EQ did. Not as slick as WoW though.
Its pretty bloody generic. Get stuff, kill things, get better stuff. Rinse and repeat.
The initial graphics settings on mine were a bit....odd. The draw distance was set at "0 feet", and the textures looked like they had been drawn on with crayon. I recommend fiddling with the settings before you try and do anything else.

Not really had time to explore properly, but it could be fun if we get a few of us together on it.

I played it when it first came out, and I thought it was pretty cool. Especially because you could play as an engineer and when you go to a high enough level you could get a "Slayer Droid" that was double your size with big nasty spikey arms to tear the shit out of things.

the maggot is atually a "leet" which is the weakest creature in the game, and it goes around shouting all the standard twatty lines you'd expect people who use l33t speak to say.

I know Bit Torrent users are supposed to "help seed the download" but this is fucking ridiculous

It's probably because I'm downloading it at work
