If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Pro-belm 3: Mouse

Post by FatherJack »

My crappy old Logitech PS2 mouse gave up the ghost a while back, and I experimented with a number of replacements, finally settling on an optical USB MS mouse. The problem has manifested itself with every mouse I've tried, though - USB or PS2 (with adapter)

3. Sometimes, mostly when I've opened a few too many windows, the mouse cursor disappears. It won't reappear until a restart. Seems perhaps processor-related, in that once a certain threshold of open active apps is reached, it's bye-bye cursor. Have tried various revisions of the Intellimouse drivers.

Not a massive problem if I'm careful, but it occurs every time I connect to server in BF2. Server selection menus are OK, but as soon as I get to the bit where you click "join game" the cursor fucks off.

After "clicking" join game using the fact that it highlights when my invisble cursor is over it, another cursor has the temerity to appear - giving me functionality within the "select spawn/kit" screens, but remaining on-screen throughout the game! On quitting the game all cursors disappear and don't return until a full reboot.

Resolution? Reboot to actually use Windows again, live with the annoying white arrow on the screen in-game.

No idea, but I love your use of the word temerity.

My cursor has done this once or twice I think, but it just worked fine again after a restart.

Seriously dude, your computer sounds fucked.

Once you get this many issues with it, it's time to look at building a new one.
I assume you've recently rebuilt it with XP SP2 and so on?
Have you tried using the drivers suggested in Windows Update for everything bar your network driver?
Basically get it onto the network after a rebuild, and do a custom windows update and use the drivers recommended in the optional hardware bit.

This has resolved several "weird problems that don't make sense" at work when we've used the latest drivers from the manufacturers website to no avail.

Don't ask me why, it doesn't make sense, but it just does. :?

I've tried component manufacturer's and windows update drivers, but not OEM PC-maker's drivers which might be worth a try. A rebuild may be in order, but most of these problems are only inconveniences and I'd rather spend my weekend playing games, not reinstalling them.

Not playing BF2 though, obviously :(

I've "accidentally" ordered one too many machines as part of a project here at work, so I may have some new components (mobo, proc) to build off soon, although it'll prob be SATA and PCI-e so might need to upgrade bits accordingly. Failing that there's a 3G 865P sat in front of me.

I don't think this is a necessarily related problem. But sometimes when I turn on my PC, my mouse doesn't get power. (The cursor is there). I have to unplug and replug my mouse in (Not fun as thats like behind the computer.. plus piles of stuff in way).. Or sometimes it works if I reset the computer again. I thought this could be something dodgy with the USB plug.. but it seems to be the same with all of the plugs, and other devices I have running from USB are fine. I haven't got another USB mouse to try instead.. Does anyone have any ideas?

I get this problem with my laptop. Can be rather irritating, and I haven't a clue what causes it.

Father J - most likely related to a graphics driver problem. Usually to do with not rendering the software cursor properly. Most games have an option to turn hardware cursor off/on. Try that. If not - and at the risk of sounding like a windoze help file - check video drivers, Dx9 and mouse drivers are all installed correctly and up to date.

Pixie - are you using a wireless mouse? Sounds like a lack of power to the USB port. If you are running a lot of USB stuff, try unplugging all but the essentials and then see if the problem recreates itself. If it is power, then get a 3rd party adapter to add power to some of the devices, or a USB extender thingy with an external power supply. If it does happen again, then it's likely the mouse itself is fubar'd.

Erm, I have two things running off USB. And its only say.. half the time that it happens. It is not wireless. It used to work absolutely fine. Actually now I think about it, it never happened before I changed motherboards.. and didn't happen for the begining period of this motherboard. I'm just lost for what could have changed.

I look for this setting in control panel to no avail. Could you enlighten me to where it may linger?

usb legacy setting is in the bios, try turning it to whatever it isn't currently set to :)

USB Legacy/BIOS USB Keyboard/BIOS USB Translation/USB Keyboard Support

Options: Enabled, Disabled
This option has so many names it's not funny. All it does it allow a USB keyboard to work in Win 3.x, MS-DOS, and other environments that are not USB aware. CAUTION: On my KT7, this option kills a USB mouse after resuming from Hibernate in Windows 2000. I recommend you disable this unless you need it to use a USB keyboard for, for example, flashing your BIOS from a DOS boot disk.
