Do you use the Arcade?

Post by FatherJack »

We, your benevolent yet mercurial admins have been talking about what we should do with the Arcade, and as this is 5punk, we don't do anything without discussion, so here it is:

While it won't be deleted immediately or anything as a direct result of this poll, we would like to know how you feel about the 5punkcade.

Keeping it simple with the first question - do you use it: yes or no. Feel free to elaborate in follow-ups as to what you think of it or what we should do with it, no course has been decided and there are a large number of options available. We'll jump in with what's possible or not and perhaps some background on why we're looking at it later on, but wanted to first gauge your opinions on it as it is.

I don't use it, Had a poke about in the past but found nothing particularly interesting to me, especially now the mahjong and word game sections are gone.

I realise a few 5punkers play it, but it seems to me that the majority of users are random kids who're skiving and bring nothing to the site, apart from multiple accounts.

I'd also be interested in how much cpu time the arcade uses, over the standard forum.

My thought on the matter would either be bin it, or keep it quietly for the few 5punkers who use it.

The previous argument I remember for the arcade was that it may bring new people to 5punk, but AFAIK only one user has ever gone from arcade user to 5punker. which makes that appear an un-viable recruitment tactic.

All of this is ignoring the fact the arcade games are generally, well, stolen, which also isn't great, especially if it's drawing a lot of random people to 5punk. (As it's evidently possible to find 5punk if you're looking for crappy flash games)

I've said no, I don't use it. As far as I can tell not many 5punkers do except when there really is nothing except that or go to sleep. Berk covers the main points on why it's a bit crap and I conker. If it went, I don't think anyone would miss it, would they?

I think I've visited it twice in my time here. As KB said, last time I remember this coming up we decided it might bring new blood, I don't really see that as a good reason to keep it if it has become surplus to requirements.

I certainly wouldn't miss it.

I've used it about half a dozen times probably.

Not recently mind you.

I'd however make it member only with a minimum post count of 3, just so people have to sign up and say hello.

That'd just encourage spamming to be allowed at the arcade.

Could it not be done so it's hidden (and kept secret) until you get x posts?

Therefore it'll be a kind of bonus gift to the people who sign up to be actual 5punkers.

But I suspect most will say they don't use it, so chucking it will be a good option.

And while we're on the mention of buttons and stuff, can we has a link put in on the server page to that website that tracks the servers on Tukkake? Be much more usefull that then current page.

I'd expect that to be doable, but kind of futile, as everyone can read this section :P

possibly linking it to waugh access might work though, as that's well moderated.

I used it heavily for about two weeks in the time running up to exams about 2 years ago. Got to the top of the leaderboard, but not been there since. I personally wouldn't miss it, and haven't been aware of any recruitment occurring from it.

Please do not delete the games hosted on the site just yet, I'd quite like to get a copy of them, as I am tinkering with the idea of creating a Wii Browser Games site in the future.

I am not exaggerating when I say it probably took 60+ hours of gathering those games from across the web, so I'd quite like to download them at some point.

In fact, I might do it now :o)

EDIT : Back on topic though, I know a lot of people that use the arcade, but without a lot of time and effort spent sorting them all into categories and submitting tournaments etc... it does get a bit boring and awkward to use.

I'd probably say delete it, as it hasn't really ever attracted new "5punkers", just hogged bandwidth for people who wanna play games whilst in work

I don't use it, but I don't see there being any problem if people want to use it (technicalities of bandwidth & admin notwithstanding), regardless if they feel like posting on the forum or not. 5punk has never been a guild/clan/exclusive group. What does it matter if people 'contribute' a thousand posts or none at all? The relaxed and welcoming atmosphere has been the most appealing part of this community to date. The very definition of a '5punker' is entirely arbitrary anyway.

Incidentally, the Waugh room (and equally the Eve 0.0 room) were both seen as necessary evils due to the nature of the games we play, but inherently go against the openness that is 5punk. Seems a little odd to go down the route of qualifications to become a 5punker before being allowed to do whatever.

I kinda agree with friz in this case. ish. almost. kinda.

There are some people I consider 5punky who aren't members of 5punk. but who play games with us (I'm looking at you, random coh people (probably some in eve too, but i don't know))

And there's people who don't play games with us, but post on the forums, they're 5punky/ers too.

However, People who don't play games with us at all, don't post on the forums, don't seem to share anything with 5punk whatsoever, and just play arcade games.

I don't think they're 5punky, 5punkers. or anything but parasites.

The number of posts/waugh suggestions were suggestions to allow 5punkers access to one of our services, while protecting 5punk as a whole from the potential issues related to the arcade. same way as any mentions of floorware go in the waugh, or hidden on the disco board.

People who only play the arcade are one thing, but your definition might be seen by lurkers, who read the boards but seldom if ever post, to include them.

I think it's extremely unfair to label them this way, although I'm sure that was not your intention.
