And once it starts happening, all the p2p programs will use encryption, like some are starting to do now, so that the ISP won't know what's in their packets and can't find out.

Nah, old people use it for doing tesco shops etc.

But like 'mong said, encryption will render this rather useless. So they'll probably watch amounts of traffic and try and use large amounts as an excuse to randomly cut connections, saying they know it's illegal stuff, and then there will be outrage and maybe we'll get free internets/upgrades for a few months.

/wishful thinking.

In fact, RIAA wants Microsoft to integrate a felcher into Windows which notifies RIAA if you listen to unapproved downloads/stuff. Linux GO anyone?

I've mentioned something like this before somewhere, but I can see Microsoft's marketing guys telling RIAA to fuck off and release their own OS to fail with.

That took about six minutes longer than I expected. I think Berk might have died.

I lol'd at "piracy stifles innovation". I hate stupid bullcrap like that corporations use to justify whatever. Piracy doesn't stifle innovation or creativity, and I doubt it puts bands off producing music. The only thing piracy stifles the growth of the record labels wallets.

BBC London News just said people who download pirated material "and visit dodgy websites could have their Internet connection suspend". Who decides? On a related note I've just watched The Lives of Others, it's very good.

here's what they are starting to do in the US:
Time Warner Cable is looking to change the pricing scheme for its broadband internet service and the change will more than likely upset bandwidth hogs who like to do a little more on the internet than casually peruse web pages.

Right now, the company is trying out tiered internet pricing in Beaumont, Texas in order to determine whether or not said pricing will be successful in other markets. The plan is to ultimately charge heavy internet users more than other subscribers instead of the current flat rate for all users.

I say "Hurrah!" for this move. More bandwidth for me to download games patches, legitimate (well, paid for, at least) porn and erm..newsgroups. Lots and lots of lovely news, can't get enough of that news.

Cutting people off from a service they pay you for, and so decrease your income = $$ :?

bandwidth costs money.

Removing heavy users (say 10% of customers using 50% of bandwidth) = buying less bandwidth = shitloads more profit.
