Where is the 2nd M in MMONG? (Tabula Rasa)

Post by Fear »

I'm a level 6 soldier thingy shooting bad things in the wilderness.

I have enjoyed it and spent until about 5am playing this - don't take this as overly negative, it still is a fun game, just a few niggles:
  • Where is the M? Multiplayer? Where? I saw about 3 other humans the whole night, and they were off doing their own thing. I did however see lag.
  • FPS it is not, you lock onto a target and then fire in the general direction of the bad guy. I was hoping for head shots and stuffs like that, but it seems it's either a hit or a miss/dodge.
  • Locking onto the target you wish to kill is hard when they are all huddled. For example it's often nice to 1 or 2 shot the lower level bad dudes before working on the boss of a group, but often it is impossible to pick who you shoot at.
  • The terrain is buggy, you sometimes can't climb slight slopes and hit invisible walls where the terrain changes (but should still be easily passable).
  • I created a pirate looking dude with pink hair and armour - as soon as you upgrade your armour you revert to the bland default colours. As you do this about 20 seconds into the game then WHAT WAS THE FUCKING POINT OF ME DESIGNING IT PINK/FABULOUS AT CREATION?
  • Nothing is really explained well, I'm having to use the wiki and a lot of randomly clicking to work out what does what.
  • This feels like Guild Wars with a subscription.

While this may seem alien to you, people usually drink or sleep at night.

Yeah, I can pretty much sympathise with all of these points. The terrain thing I noticed but didn't particularly bother me, same with the lack of teams - I'm not interested in teaming with randoms anyway. The combat system isn't FPS, but I prefer it to the usual 'select enemy, wait for it to die' method most go for. The paint thing is pretty pointless at creation, but paint recipies are abundant and you even start with 10 paints for free, so it's easy to customise each new piece of armour. Also, pink seems to be a very popular colour.

I don't think I'd compare it to Guild Wars in anything other than the amount of quests you get. Only a couple are instanced, and the game is split into persistant blocks, the first of which should take you to about level 15.

I'm still unsure about it personally. There's nothing that really grips me about it, although the more I play it the more I'm enjoying it, but similarly there's nothing that really puts me off either. What I think might happen is that it'll take another six months or so of patches to iron out the bugs and lag, and add some more interactive content, and then it'll become quite a good game.

What Beliame said^

I was on until about 2am, and I've just most of the afternoon gaming with pants. Gona be playing again in a few hours, but yes, server population does seem a little low in the starting zones. Further out there's alot more players, because there's alot more fun.

I've been trying to take the first outpost thing in the Wilderness - only I die - I'm massively out-gunned. Am I doing it wrong?

There was one other dude who was helping me, but he died too, lots. We weren't in a team or gang - mainly because I have no idea how to invite someone to join a team. I haven't even found a way to chat!

Help!

Edit: MOAR Questions...
If I take that outpost thing, will that mean everyone on my map, including those fresh from boot camp, will see it as ours too? How does all that work?

Is this the small outpost by the river, or slightly more south?

The outposts are persistent, so if they're captured then everyone in your instance can use it. Thing is they're designed to be a community effort, so I wouldn't even attempt to take it solo at level 15. I've found that, on the EU server at least, instance 1 always has it captured because there's always loads of people about to defend it and whore the defence/attack badges. On the other instances they're always in enemy hands because there's never anyone on there. I tend to switch to 1 if I need to get to them then switch back to a lower load instance after I'm done for less lag/tards or if I fancy having a pop at one for some badges or kills.

I've seen one retaken once. The crusties on the outside weren't too bad, and we took out the static guns without too much trouble. I found that the door took hardly any damage though, until a couple of sappers turned up with some sort of welders and took it down. We captured it fairly quickly after that.

The outposts are the best bit of the game I've seen so far. My first encounter with one had me gawping, and I was on TS with Hehulk when he did his first and he had a similar reaction. They're pretty brutal. If TR ever took off with 5punkers I reckon we could take one with about 4-6 of us.

Well, if 5punkers want to play it (Pants? Joose? Vodka?), I'm quite happy to splurge £10 a month or whatever for the occasional bit of 5punk squad action.

Outposts, yes, win. I did get slightly excited when I found myself in the middle of a big f**k-off assault on the one I was basing out of. Pants isn't wrong when he said that's probably the best bit of the game*.

*I've not seen much of the game yet, so that that with a pinch of salt, but for low-level, it's win

I'm letting my subscription run for at least another month to get more of a taste for it, plus it's very soloable, which appeals to me. Although if anyone I refer signs up I won't have to because I'll get a free month :)

Dunno, runs okay on mine. I reckon if you can run COD you could probably run this. I've got one more trial key if you want to try.

Well, it runs acceptably well on my machine

1Gb RAM
512MB X700

However I'm towards the low end of minimium spec.

Actually, on closer inspection, four people have to sign up and I get four free months :? Also, I can't invite anyone once I've sent my invites unless all four sign up. What a strange system.

Depends, I'm rather hard to please and not very excitable when it comes to many MMONG's (barring Galaxies, which I sex-wee'd over then found out they only accepted Credit Cards and nothing else, so I broke down).

So peaked is the correct word, it's reached a level where I decided it could be a sufficiently interesting game to garner my monies.

Well, I've started to download the client, but it may be four months before it completes. I'll ask for a trial when I've actually got it.

I think I've got about 30 hours left of trial, then if I like it I shall purchase it from play.com (as it's cheaper than buying direct).

Is everyone using a modem to download or something?

I got it from here:

ftp://ftp.playtr.com/

at speeds of over 900 kB/s

In order to make a internet-meme joke, I shall also state I managed speeds of over 9000 hB/s.
